The Breitling Watch Source Forums

Hi there,

Just checking in as a new member of this forum. I have been around other watch boards for a while and have somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 watches at the moment but no Breitlings yet. I sort of have my eye on a pre-owned "New" Blackbird and was wondering if anyone has any feedback on the model. Also any idea of Chicagoland AD discounts or likely selling price new would be appreciated if discussion of that kind of thing is allowed on the forum.

Welcome to the forum Jamie. There are plenty of older threads (just use the search) on discounts so you can see the ballparks quite easily.. would prefer not to have too many threads on "what discount can I get?" since there are a lot of them... but glad to see you are joining the Breitling Club

Blackbird is a good choice.. I'll be putting up a video review of it in the next little while. I have it filmed I just haven't uploaded it to youtube yet.

Yeah, I am well and truly hooked actually. I am just getting started with Breitling, but I have already made the rounds of Omega, Rolex, Sinn and a dozen or so others not really worth mentioning. I have always liked Breitlings, don't really know why I've never picked one up. I like the Navitimers, the SOH (but wish there was a 42mm version) and the Blackbird (and of course the Chronomat). I love good Lume, so will probably start with the BB and see where that takes me.

Welcome to the forum! I love the Blackbird, I think it is one of the models that has some of the most unique features: The new Breitling Caliber 44 movement with the large date. It is the only model that has a different background on the date numerals, black to match the dial. Not a big deal for most, but I appreciate it. The Blackbird special pilot bracelet with the faceted edges is unique. Also the Blackbird logo on the watch back instead of the standard. It's an amazing looking watch, albeit perhaps a bit understated. I came close to getting that, it was between the Blackbird and the Steelfish. I would really never use the chronograph functions, and the price difference was a big consideration for me, the Steelfish being less than half the price. If I had really liked the Blackbird overall much better than the Steelfish, I would probably have gone for it. As it is, I am more than thrilled with the Steelfish, but that's another story.
Enjoy the Blackbird, although not a limited edition I believe it is somewhat of a "Special" edition.

ps The movement is quite complex, hence the higher price. It is quite interesting how the large date at the top of the dial is made by two separate apertures and two wheels for the numbers. It takes quite a bit of engineering to get those wheels to match up properly when one has only 0, 1, 2 abd 3, and the other 0-9, in particular after 30 and 31, when the date goes back to 01, instead of carrying on 32,33 etc. It was one of the features which absolutely fascinated me about the movement.

The blackbird does have nice lume.. as you probably already know, since the indexes are reverse of the chronomat evo in that the center is lumed, rather than the outsides, give it a more substantial lume area.

I have looked at them several times and just don't like them. I really do not like the crown guards, they look pretty cheesy IMHO sort of like Graham watches or Reidenschild but aside from that the watches just look gimicky. Pannys are NOT for me, I just don't "get it".
