Hi Folks,

For some time now, I have been ernestly looking at Rolex watches, for a number of reasons:
1) They have stayed away from "bigger is better" philosophy. There are a lot of bigger watches I really like - and have owned, but I am finding a lot more comfort with a watch that is max 40mm
2) Inhouse movements on all their watches.
3) Great selection of 34mm, 36mm, 40mm watches in all types and price ranges
4) Traditional good looks, with some subtle and innovative ideas which give you the choice of either totally retro style - which, in some models has hardly changed in decades - or a traditional more updated style
5) When I see the markup that other manufacturers add to their prices, with their newly-added inhouse movement models, the Rolex prices no longer seem out of range.

With all of the above in mind, including days of website reasearch, I seriously started my Rolex shopping. Turns out that it started and ended with the same AD - and the same salesperson - this very afternoon. I had tried a number of models last week, including 34mm Air Kings, 40mm GMT IIc (with ceramic dial), 36mm Perpetual, and the 40mm Milgauss (with both green and plain sapphire crystal and "black" dial). Since I have lusted after the new Milgauss since it was introduced in 2007 - it turned out that it was really the one that sang to me. I mentioned I had a price limit, and I was able to get it - tax included - for that amount! I ended up with the plain crystal, for me the green was just a little too much, and a bit too busy with a combo of white and orange markers, and the small numbers at the end of each marker closest the dial.
I will be picking it up on Friday, so until then I have borrowed a photo from the web. I can't wait to get the actual watch, and get my buddy to take some wrist shots. Here it is for now:

So, a couple more sleepless nights and the money will be in the bank, and it will be mine! One of my favourite all-time watches of any brand! Almost forgot to mention, my love of little details like the orange thuderbolt second hand. To me, that is unique on it's own, and the green crystal somehow takes the spotlight away from it. The dial, when looked at beside an actual black dial, is more greyish brown, I would definitely not call it real black, very matte black at most.

Very cool, just visited that dealer last week shopping for an Omega for my wife, my favorite part was the rotating bullet proof door........haha.

I like your choice, very stylish, not too over the top, orange thunder bolt is different, but good different.

I never did end up buying the Omega I looked at, decided on a Breitling starliner instead.

Congrats Carl. I've had a Milgauss on my wrist a few times and that green one, along with the GMTIIc are the only ones that stand out for me. It is a great watch and both versions (of the crystal) looks great in person. Get some wrist shots after you get it home.

Yes, the bulletproof door. I sure get a kick out of that! The first time I rang the bell, and they saw me, they looked terrified! After you get in the antichamber, they must do some kind of a scan or something, it seems like ages until they finally open the door. Meanwhile, they are all staring at you.
Anyway, I dealt with Harvey, and I was more than satisfied. Have also dealt with Fiore on occasion, again excellent service.

With your new found love of the smaller pieces there are a whole bunch of watches out there that are now open to you (and your wallet! )

I'm a little surprised you didn't go for the green sapphire version instead actually, but I can understand your reasons if you think it looks a little too busy. Also I can actually imagine the green sapphire becoming a little like the orange bezel version of the PO. The orange bezel model was the one that EVERYONE bought when it first came out, but now people seem to lean a little more towards the black bezel PO instead. I wouldn't be surprised if the clear sapphire Milgauss became the more popular over time.

Anyway, like the others I'm looking forward to those pics! Congrats again.

i am absolutely in the same boat as you carl. I love the milgauss! but am not a fan of the green glass one, the white and black modal appeals to me way more. I am constantly blowing hot and cold on rolex's but when ever i am in the mood for looking at rolexes it is always the milgauss and the explorer 2 ( in white )

It has been a long weekend, without the new Milgauss! I was supposed to pick it up on Friday, but now will be sometime this week. Cannot wait to get it on my wrist, and get some shots.

Thats a great watch, I dont wear rolex for 2 reason, no1. they dont make anything big enough for me to not look too small. the big watches arent a fashion trend for me, i have HUGE wrists, like 9". i wantes a sea dweller for a while, but its just too small.

the other reason, everyone, and i mean eveyrone down here (west palm beach fl) has a damn rolex. i see 30 a day. its rediculous. one day i was standing at work and there were 4 customers in the store ( we sell truck parts) and 3 of them had on identincal 2 tone blue faced sumbariners.

i would consider that watch if it fit for sure, nice choice!
