Altair,

Isn't easier if you purchase a volume license key?

I was just making a joke

Well with the copies reference anyway, we don't actually buy physical DVDs. Rather Microsoft OS seats equal to the number of our employees, so that if we decide to go back to Vista, XP, or to the next OS it is free of charge, for the next five years anyway. Buys peace of mind and flexibility.

The way the process is done is we get a single serial number, which we hard code into a start up script on our customized images for all our machines (we use Norton Ghost to produce our images)

That script automatically activates Windows and ensures compliance. Downside is that it requires internet connectivity, plus side is it saves thousands of hours of IT leg work.

The cool thing with SCCM is we can remotely deploy these images now, so no need to train and deploy tens of it employees, just the two!

We are deploying it to our company this week. remotely too. We are using SCCM, kinda nervous about it actually!

Wow, I feel sorry for your users. You don't let them choose what OS to use?

We tried that for a while, supporting 47000 employees with a unified OS is much more cost effective.

About 20,000 employees, $6 billion in revenue per quarter. Not too small.

It company or??

How do you support your employees if they have different OS? plus aren't the added saving of bulk licensing attractive?

We did a survey at our company and 95% of our people prefer better quality support over OS choice. Which is why I am thinking you are from an IT firm and have tech savvy employees.

 well there you go.

Software procurement and deployment department in that type of company follow a totally different module than ours.

I manage an IT department for an Oil company, mostly gear heads and chemical engineers. So we are looking to simplify and unify the computing environment as much as possible. Plus buying in bulk means significant savings.

Must be awesome working for Google, keep hearing great things!

Yeah, we're a bit different. Probably one of the only companies of any size where the email system isn't run by the IT department.

Since Vista has had such a bad rap, maybe MS just renamed it to Win 7 and told everyone it's "new"!

No complaints or problems about 7 yet. I doubt that I will. Its fast and stable, and installation was a breeze. Boots up in 17 seconds of an SSD once the computers BIOS does its loading. I think the biggest improvement for computers is using an SSD instead of a regular HDD, there's zero lag with it. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator both open in under 5 seconds, compared to 15 seconds or so on the same computer, but with a regular HDD.

+1 for SSD. My machine is still on back order but it does have a 64GB SSD that I plan to load the entire Adobe Master Collection on to :D
