but the rubbing is not going to scratch, or ruin the crystal of the watch face at all will it? you can barely hear it rub so it isn't annoying at all. i just want to know that it wont scratch, or ruin the crystal watch face at all by doing so.

thanks again!
james.

It won't scratch the crystal for sure, but it might scratch the AR (depends on how hard and rough is the lid material).
I'd make some improvisation too keep the lid off the watch.

There is no need to put it in the winder, if you wear the Bentley on a daily basis because
it has a ~40hour power reserve...
Can you share a pic? :D

Scratches on the AR, already discussed here, a while back:

yeah the front lid on the watch winder is made out of hard plastic glass and it is very smooth... its not like it was rubbing against a rock or something like that... are you supposed to be able to see the AR coating? if i look extremely close at the watch face i can see two very minor scratches on the face and the rest is completely crystal clear.

how can you tell if the AR coating has been scratched?

You'll know it's been scratched if you see scratches on it. Sorry if that sounds obvious, but it's the only way.

ok so there is no way of wearing the AR coating off by having the watch rubbing against a piece of plastic glass (the front of the watch winder lid)? it can only be worn off if you scratch the face?

AR is a surface coating - rub it enough and it will inevitably rub off. It generally gets scratched because people don't subject the expensive, double AR coated sapphire crystal to constant rubbing against a piece of hard plastic. I am sure that over time a watch winder that rotates at hundreds of times a day will wear the AR. Can't give you hard evidence because I don't know anyone who tried it, but AR is a microscopically thin treatment and it isn't going to like constant friction.

Roffensian thanks for your response.

It was only rubbing against the soft plastic glass front cover of the winder and was only rubbing on it for less than a minute so it should be fine i think no?

regards,
james.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure how to answer that because I am now totally confused.

Lookinjg at your post above, and comparing it with this post......

Also, I always keep my breitling in a watch winder at night when i am not using the watch and when it is in the winder, the winder lid doesn't close completely because the watch is too big, so the watch face rubs on the hard plastic glass lid... any problem with that?

They seem inconsistent - we have gone from rubbing on a hard plastic lid every night to winding on a soft plastic for less than a minute.

Bottom line - I wouldn't use a watchwinder that has something rubbing against the crystal of the watch.

If the crystal looks scratched or damaged, it is. If it looks fine, it is. Try not to hit it or rub it on anything hard or abrasive. It might be fine, but why bother risking it when you can prevent it?
