I'm ok with animals that can be farmed like cows, crocs, snake etc. But as far as I know, there aren't any elephant farms... are there?? I hope not, that would be hard to stomach.

What about Shark? Are they farmed for their skin and meat? I assume so. I've seen the butchers who slice the fins off a live sharks in the ocean and throw them back in to die in agony. I'd love to slice the hands off those a-holes. I'll never understand why the rest of the shark isn't used for meat and skin?? All they want is fins for soup.

As far as I know, sharks aren't farmed........ which has always given me a huge problem with shark skin as well. And yes I've seen those b*****ds who cut off sharks fins as well. Absolute scum of the earth IMO.

I just Googled "shark farm" and indeed it seems they do not exist. Yet. I believe there is a market for them, but the husbandry issue (reproducing in captivity) is the problem.

I love this forum for this reason... watch talk always transitions into other interesting discussion.

Just wanted to make sure you knew I was NOT posting this promoting the use of elephants for skins...
Just as a color comparison...Figured it might show a similar real life color comparison...Your post reminded me of seeing that color and liking the way it looked.

Of course not!! I really like the strap you posted, it was one of the straps that got me onto this whole custom thing. Thanks for posting it.

My assumption with the likes of ABP is that skins like elephant are pretty old. Clearly that's now restricted, but an elephant would produce a lot of straps!

to me I have less problem with that than I do with the likes of seal and shark that aren't currently restricted and where you truly are helping to support the industry.

That's not to say that I would wear elephant - I agree with others that it seems wrong, but assuming that I am correct in thinking that it's old hides (anything else would surely be illegal) then I do see it slightly differently.

The strap from Stone Creek straps is in! Jeanna at Stone Creek does absolutely flawless work. I inspected this strap very closely and there isn't a flaw or a stitch that isn't 100% perfect. Plus she was very friendly, accommodating and easy to work with.

The strap is nubuck, so has a soft suede like texture, with black stitching, black calf lining and black edges. She supplied me with both an ivory nubuck, black nubuck, and black calf keepers so I can choose which is more suitable. I'm very pleased with the result.

Thanks Jeanna!
