I'm assuming the olds are throwing some money at this (if not all), so perhaps take it easy to begin with.

Why not start out with something a little lower end? Then you could work your way up to a nice one by college graduation time?
That's what I did anyways.

+1
BTW, I think that it's part of the fun to go gradually, one step at a time.
Of course if money's not an issue, then you can skip this, but I think that it's better to spend your own hard earned money on a watch like that (assuming that Jay's right). It just feels better. But that's just me, I'm not here to judge, I had a Swatch at 14. :)

At the risk of sounding like an old git, I've got to say I agree. And certainly NOT because I think nice watches watches should be the preserve of "older people". No, the reason I say it is because personally (and this is just my personal opinion) I'd have been scared stiff wearing ANY watch worth over a couple of hundred pounds at age 14. Messing around at school is a sure fire way to ruin a perfectly good watch!

I started out with a £10 Timex at age 6, then progressed through various Casios and Zeons, etc, until I had a really nice Seiko at 16 (pressie for passing exams). My first "prestige" watch came 12 or 13 years ago after I finished Uni and had landed myself a proper job - it was a Omega Seamaster Pro.

My advice would be to start off a little lower. If you want to stand out a bit from your mates, go for a Tag or something. Certainly the MOST I'd suggest going to would be an Omega SMP.

But hey, it's your cash!

Haha, ya, my cash ifI had any. I had a post a while back about proper age for buying watches and, well, same result as you guys now! I guess 10k is pretty far out there... plus I've "made a deal" with myself that I have to earn 3 times whatever I want. So earning 30k now is kinda tough... So then here's my next question:

What do you guys think is a good watch for under 5k (preferably lower, 5k is my max now, still pushing it)?

Don't say Tag Formula One, I'm sorry but I absolutely hate that watch... (wait, that is a watch series right? Well, the Tag formula whatever. I'm not too sure of the name)

There's some good choices for 3K and under... have you thought of any of the Omegas? A seamaster or speedmaster is pretty proper for young people and old in my opinion... or even better, there are always nice used Breitlings up for sale on this forum... many of them for 3K and under... :D

Or Tag (which was my first proper watch too and I still got it) Carrera, Monaco, etc... 3K is a nice budget

Check out some used stuff for a good deal. A steelfish can be had for $1200-1300. Thats a whole lot of watch for the money. I sold mine about a year ago and have contemplated buying another one ever since.

when it comes to watches, is "used" actually a term that matters? Like is it badically the same as a regular new watch if it gets polished up (if its only been used for a couple years, not vintage!)?

A good complete service of the watch would help... people normally say the textbook rule is every five years... maybe if you find something within that timeframe and it'll still be in relatively good condition... but of course depends on who you buy it from... you missed out on some really good stuff for sale like 2-3 weeks ago on this forum... I would have to say it's also definitely easier to find a "used" model with box and papers too... which can "enhance" the "new" experience... :D

Ive bought used watches that are almost indistinguishable from new. Find a good seller with a watch in excellent condition and you save a lot of money.

Ok, I guess if there's a watch that's over my price limit, I can search for used ones.

Agree completely with D8. I was in the same boat, wore G-Shocks etc at school, then a series of Seikos for work before I started getting into nicer stuff.

Omega SMP is a great suggestion if you ask me, maybe even a second-hand one in good condition (Omegas depreciate quite a bit once they leave the AD, probably because decent discounts are available from new). If Omegas aren't your thing, Steelfish is a good suggestion too.

Get a SuperO if you want sporty, get a Colt GMT if you want classy.
Both of these can be had for under 3k new.

Or buy one used, and spend the rest on your girlfriend. :)
