Aleister if this comment is directed towards my earlier post that I made in responding to Oesters statement about European gun ownership let me expound a bit.

I think the freedom is derived from having the option or choice, unrestricted by governmental constraits, to own or carry a gun if one desires. The majority of people in the US don't have to carry a gun for protection. It's not the wild west. However, the choice to protect oneself should be left to the individual and not a governemtal entity that thinks it knows what's best for me.

Not to rain on anybody's parade, but I knew this thread was gonna get hijacked into a gun/anti-gun debate...

I'm not going to add anything inflammatory but being a firearms owner, (or used to be... a long story) I can tell you that I have debated many a issue with people that are anti-gun...

my diplomatic solution...

I invite them to take them shooting :D ... take them to the gun range... I honestly can say 95% of all people I've taken have loved it to the point where they want to buy a firearm or want to go again... it totally changes their perspective on firearms...

I agree with others. Freedom doesn't mean you MUST carry a gun to protect yourself. That isn't freedom, that's living in a martial state. Freedom is, that if I CHOOSE to own/carry a weapon, I can--there's ways to do it legally.

Compare it to free speech. Freedom means that if I CHOOSE to speak out against the government, I can--there's ways to do that legally. Freedom doesn't mean that I'm REQUIRED to speak out against the government. That's another fundamental difference between conservatives and liberals--conservatives believe that if they disagree with their government, they CAN speak out against it. Liberals, by the very definition of the term, believe that they are OBLIGATED to tear down their government, that it's not an option afforded to them as free people, it's MANDATORY.

jlee, you're right in that some understanding of weapons themselves can go a long way. Handling and firing them can help people recognize them for what they actually are by themselves, and not what we sometimes make them out to be.

Let's not get further into that argument - it never ends well.

I'm perfectly happy agreeing that we have different opinions.
