I own both brands of watches. I love the unique qualities of Breitlings and their "not-so-run-of-the-mill look. I love rolex for their smoothness and precision. IMHO, Rolex offers a superior movement. Breitling is good but Rolex is great (IMHO).

The real concern for me with Rolex is their pricing. You are paying more for the brand because it is a Rolex. To some it's worth it. I love my Submariner. Silky smooth...

I gotta add my two cents to an old discussion.

The more you learn about watches, the less this question matters. True, Rolex spends lots on marketing, but so does Breitling. I make the point too that Breitling is very much a mainstream brand – in terms of brand recognition, the order must surely be Rolex, Omega, Tag…then Breitling. The same arguments to the effect that with Rolex you are paying for the marketing also applies to Breitling. None of these things represents a logical investment. Once you start spending over a grand on a watch, the reasons why are complex.

Rolex makes fantastic watches – there are Subs out there that haven’t had a service for 20 years. Dependable, well made…but for me, on the whole, as boring as a Timex. Rolex is the Mercedes of watches really. Sure, they have their souped up AMGs – anyone with an ounce of taste can appreciate the Daytona. But they also make a sh!tload of boring sedans like the Datejust and the Explorer.

I can’t think of another area in which there is so much choice as there is with watches – it’s mind boggling. So I don’t think the question is “Rolex or Breitling” – the question is what little mechanical contraption do you wish to spend a few grand on?

Rolex has always been part of my family as far as I can think back. But the moment I laid my eyes on my TransOcean I knew Breitling is the brand for me that I would choose over Rolex. The only Rolex I totally digg, besides my Dads Submariner:

Either company makes amazing time-pieces.

A watch either speaks to you or is doesn't. If it does you must have it no matter what brand. I have worn Rolexes since I was 20. First luxury purchase I ever made. I have a SS Sub and a TT Daytona (love them both) until I came across a Breitling for Bentley Mark VI with a croc band. I never really knew much about Breitling until I started researching. Would not have considered Breitling just because I was not informed or saw one that really moved me. I know the Mark Vi is not a crazy popular Breitling (which I like since you don't see many) but it is the one for me as I couldn't get it out of my mind. I am wearing it a lot but still wear my Rolexes. Lets face it, we are lucky to have such decisions. They are both great brands that make great products and I am proud to wear either.

I do love my first Breitling I must say and enjoy this forum.

Ultimately you can only compare individual models and how they appeal to you, rather than dismissing something purely on brand. If you like the look of a particular watch and it makes you feel good then buy it.

i currently own a rolex and i am also looking to get a breitling (either a cockpit or superocean chrono).
Both brands have their strengths. i prefer the styling of the current breitling range for its sportier edge, whereas rolex watches are more timeless and classic.

One thing you can be sure is that rolex will always make its classic models with little or no change, whereas i think future breitling designs would be more unpredictable. For example one of my favourite breitlings is the cockpit...but i am only interested in the older dial, i do not care for the new one at all. Breitlings models are more hit and miss for me.

Most of it's been said earlier. It's a completely personal choice - both brands have a something to offer and both have their pros and cons (like everything in this world :D ). You could discuss this topic for hours (as has been proven with the number of responses so far  )

Personally I'm not a massive fan of Rolex but would consider the DSSD if I was to actually purchase one. Rolex's for me are pricey and very well known. They market their product very well and the fact they use in-house movements is a big plus. However you can spot one a mile off.

I love Breitling. Rugged, well made and precise and not as well known I would say as Rolex with the general public. I particularly love the detail and busy-ness of the Navitimers. Beautiful.

But that is only my opinion. The brand and model that sings to you is all that matters.

Enough said  Good luck!
