The Breitling Watch Source Forums

Well, folks, I don't know what has been hitting me lately. For years and years, especially the last year, the only thing for me was Breitling. Starting in early 90's, my Colt Quartz, then 1997-2008, my SuperOcean. Last year I got a new Steelfish, an AS Blacksteel, and early this year I simply had to have a new 09 Seawolf. The Blacksteel and the Steelfish ended up with no wrist time, so they are now sold. The 09 Seawolf is the winner so far, but it will be going as well!
After selling the Steelfish and Blacksteel, I thought I would wait, as my lust for the Panerai had been severely diminished due to lack of what I call satisfactory AD. I ended up putting a deposit on a new Omega Aqua Terra, with the new 8500 Caliber. Yesterday, I was at another AD, and tried on a quite small 36mm Railmaster with a ss bracelet. Wow! This is a simple dial, very clear, great lume, and the watch also has a great history. No calendar either, which is what I have been looking for for a long, long time, and was one thing which really sold me at first on the Panerai Basic models. Now I cannot get the little Railmaster out of my head!
Anyway, the whole thing is kind of bothering me in a fun sort of a way really. As I look at the beautiful new Seawolf on my wrist, I think what a beautiful watch it is. It's just that I don't love it any more.
Just some things I wanted to get off my chest, since I consider a lot of you my friends, and the only ones who can really listen when I talk about watches.

hey carl, well another great post. omegas are great watches,i had a seamaster which i sold for my GT. but i loved it. so do what you think is right in your heart. but being a watch geek as my wife calls me, you dont buy a watch for other people but only for you. good luck with the railmaster. and thanks for the blacksteel. it was a pleasure to be in contact with you through out the process.

Carl, your ADD when it comes to watches is confusing a lot of people

Watch collecting is so much fun. You can fall madly, deeply in love with one particular piece. You can have a wonderful relationship with it, where it brings you joy every day. Now, bear in mind, during that relationship you can go visit other watches. You can imagine what it would be like to be with them. You can even try them on, in front of other people! And if/when that time comes, where the magic is gone and you're just going through the motions of putting your watch on every day, you can go get another one. And you don't need a lawyer to do it!

I think you have a way of communicating that "first-date" excitement about your watches in a way in which can all relate. If the Omegas are speaking to you, listen. Just make sure you post back on *this* forum if you do -- we don't want you running off and hanging out on the wrong side of the tracks

That´s so funny to me and a very interesting topic. I had a similar discussion with my self the other day with a different out come to yours.

I was in Munich airport four days ago and had two hours to kill. There´s a really nice selection of watch brands and a really wide variety of models there. I got to thinking why I´m only intrested in Breitlings. So I went to see if I´d find something new and exciting. I took my time, talked to the sales person and tried on some fine pieces. Other brands have very nice and handsome watches of course, but everytime i got to Ling show case my heart raced just a little bit faster. I feel their style and finish was everytime just the tiniest margin higher and that´s crucial. Also Lings style is so much more striking compared to other higher end watch makers. It only strengthend my love of Lings. (Others will no doubt have similar thought´s about other brands)

I realize that since I wanted a B for seven years and a few months ago got the first, I´m still spelbound with it which is clouding my justment for sure. It´s all so new and exciting. Having said that, even if Breitlings got one of the widest model ranges It´s mostly more of the same. (I´m probably going to get killed for saying this. ) For most people who buy watches there are about 4-6 models and that´s it. I´ve even tested this with couple of my friends. They think Chronomats, Blackbirds, Cockpits look the same, so do all the Aeromarines and Navitimers. I have to agree with that to a certain extent. It takes some time to realise the differences in details.

So if you´ve fallen out of love with Lings maybe the excitment isn´t there anymore after so many years "of the same" and you need something new to get excited about. Sometimes we all need changes. (Remember the colour of the grass... You´ll be back! ) I´m on the other hand at the beginning of my journey with Lings and I have still several to lust after.

As long as your watch brings joy to your life who cares which brand or model it is.

Happens to the best of us (and me! ). Never thought I'd sell my Le Mans, but then a financial need to sell it reared up, so I convinced myself that I was going to sell. I then found another way of financing what I needed to, so the Le Mans came off the market. BUT, I never felt the same about it after deciding to sell............ hence why it's back on the market.

It's an odd thing when you fall out of love with a piece.

Well, not fed up at all. It still is my favourite of all the Breitlings. I simply found something that I like better.
I don't have a lot of money (not a complaint, just a fact of life), so I cannot afford to keep the Seawolf and get the Railmaster as well. I would like to have kept the AS Blacksteel that I just sold as well. It really would please me to be able to keep the Seawolf.

As Driver said, it happens to us all. I find myself being diverted by different things all the time, and tastes do change over time. Four weeks ago I was ready to drop everything to start gathering more Panerais, but for various reasons (including economic ones) I've abandoned that idea...

Carl, as I said in your other thread, I can understand completely where you're coming from. If I were you, though, I'd think very carefully before selling the Seawolf in order to get the Railmaster. The Railmaster is in very much the same style as your Aqua Terra (despite being smaller), so what's going to happen if some other style captures your interest in a few months? At least it might be safer to wait for a little while after you've got your AT?

(And this is coming from someone who is about 70% of the way towards convincing himself to get a Railmaster )

Well, I must say that I am overwhelmed by all of your responses. Thank You so much for your comments, sentiments and advice. This is why, regardless of whether I have a Breitling or not, this forum will always be my home for all matters involving watches.
I am certainly not tired of my Seawolf, or any other Breitlings. My purchase of numerous watches, including three Breitlings, one Tissot and one Raymond Weil, this past year or so - and the fact that I haven't really found one that I can honestly say I still love - makes me realize that it is time to move on.
Funny thing, how one really does feel "abandoned" sometimes, when another member sells or trades a watch that you thought he or she was truly fond of, and usually the same model as one that you have. I kind of felt that a few months ago, when Metal86 decided to sell his Seawolf. His postings were also one of the things that motivated me.
The one Breitling, which I had for 10 years, 1997-2007, is still my favourite. I "traded" it at my AD, in order to get a 25% discount on the new AS Blacksteel, which I simply had to have at the time. During the time I had that watch, I rarely even considered buying another one, until the PRO I bracelet gave out and I decided to get a whole new watch.
I suppose I really am a "one watch man". Quite possibly searching for the one watch that I will wear all the time. Apart from the emotional factor, the fact that I don't have a lot of money makes that a very likely possibility.
After selling my Steelfish and Blacksteel, I was going to wait, once I realized that I was not going to get a Panerai. Then my AD showed my the new Aqua Terra. I had noticed a number of Omega models, and until then the only one that really got my attention was the Hour Vision, but at 8 grand was way out of my price range. Hence the Aqua Terra, which I actually like better anyway. The only Railmaster I had seen until last Sunday was the 49mm xxl model, and that really does nothing for me. When I saw the smaller models, I realized that I had found the watch I should be getting. My AD has been good enough to hold the Aqua Terra for me, with a relatively small deposit, until the money from my Blacksteel sale is in my account. There is no way that I will back out of that deal, I have much too good a rapport with that shop. I will purchase the watch, and likely the Railmaster as well. I may decide to leave the Aqua Terra in the box (if I have enough will power)and resell it as BNIB. To get the Railmaster, the Seawolf has to be sold, though.
That is the short term plan for now. I just have to get back down to the Omega AD on the weekend and have another look at that Railmaster!

I like the way you think things through Carl. You certinely seem to have a firm grasp on what you like and you dont, Omega is a fine company and they stepped up with their newest midels. I am sure you will love them!

I have the 42MM Railmaster, great watch IMO. The movement is simplistic but does its job perfectely (I do mean perfectely) in fact it outshines many of my more expensive pieces in terms of reliability and performance, go figuere! Its also very well made and has an excellent finish for the money, one of the best bargains for a classic, dressy, sport watch (it is a Seamaster after all)
