After I have taken my Blackbird accidentally (it is so comfortable ... ) for a couple of bumpy rides lately when mountain-biking I decided I need to get another watch which I can punish a little bit more whilst the Blackbird gets its well deserved break (it has been on my wrist since my wife gave it to me last year on my birthday).

I was thinking about a Seiko Orange Monster but am not sure if an automatic watch is such a good idea for mountain-biking. I have found opinions for and against this.

A G-Shock would be an obvious choice but I haven't found one I like yet.

Any other suggestions? What do you use for your outdoor activities if you cannot or do not want to take your Breitling with you?

The Orange Monster might be tough enough for mountain-biking, but I've never used mine for that.

I generally wear either my G-Shock, my Casio Pathfinder, my Timex Ironman or sometimes (very rarely) a Polar heart-rate monitor. My Luminox would probably be suitable as well. Out of all of those, I think the Pathfinder is the best, and I love playing around with the compass and altimeter.

Probably a good idea not to take your Blackbird though

Sector 255 and Seiko diver's kinetic.

I'd go with the Seiko Kinetic Diver or possibly the automatic Monster Diver, although I'd always generally I'd say quartz is the way to go with a sports watch.

I had a Kinetic Diver for a while but sold it as the strap is just too chunky under a shirt sleeve, but for sports stuff it's ideal. I had a Seiko Monster Diver too for a while (black dial, not the orange) but it irritated me as it gained like a nightmare, had no hacking second hand, and can't even be hand-wound. However, it's got an incredibly simple movement which I guess that's probably a good thing in a sports/beater watch, as it makes it pretty tough. (As a movement it's probably completely untouched by human hands throughout it's construction!).

The really good thing with Seikos though is the lume. They use something called Lumibrite and it kicks Superluminova out of the stadium! It's amazingly bright and I can't believe why other manufacturers haven't developed something similar.

You could always look at Lum-Tec watch. They are quartz, comfortable, easy to read and the Lume is Fantastic...Chris makes some awesome looking watches and they are affordable. My 2 cents off the usual path of recommendations.

i am having the same dilema and thinking ill get a TI Chrono Avenger M1 Quartz and can take a beating just waiting for one at the right price

An M1 would do the job nicely (I had one of those too for a few days!), but I guess it depends how much you want to spend on a beater.

Don't care much for bling when I am sporting.
I use a Casio F28W-1. It's waterproof, shockproof, basically bulletproof and the best part is it's $13.95.

exactly ill try and find one in need of tlc at an auction dont care if it has papers just need to be cheap, either that or ill buy a pulsar so i can use it at spin too

i use my tissot t touch for the beater. plus if you need to know how high above sea leval you are it helps(i guess) its also got a compass so when your mt biking you dont get lost. well there are my 2 cents.

Let us know what you end up choosing and your opinions on it. I have been looking for a similar type watch for outdoor and gym activities, but I tend to keep looking at watches I really don't want to beat up on!

I have both Gshocks and and OM, All of them can take the beating, I have used them On my mountain bikes with no problems, Personal choice though would be a G shock, I think they are one of THE iconic watches of the modern age, also depending on which one you get they have so neat chrono functions!
What I often do is strap on of my G's to the handlebars then I don't have to take my eyes of the road!
I would recommend the mudman, it has a great display, with both the day and date plus time all displayed on one screen.
The other one I would recommend is the 25th year annivesary GW5525A-1
This one is a square watch with a great clear display and the advantage of both solar and atomic feature's, I use this watch as my timekeeping standard, it updates everynight and even the the smallest amount of light will charge it, a wonderful comfortable watch and I love it!

I'm an avid mountain biker, and wore an OM for biking for about a year with no ill effects. I find the biggest criteria for me is to have a 4:00 crown or a crown that is sunken and not abrasive against the back of my hand. I also wore a Tissot T-Touch, Alpha GMT auto, and a few SKX divers. No issues with any of them, but the OM was very comfortable on Watchadoo bracelet.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll get an OM at some point but right now I seem to have narrowed it down to the Mudman GW-9010-1ER (thanks to Ian for pointing me in this direction) or the Gulfman GW-9100-1ER whereby the Mudman is on top right now. However, I cannot get hold of one for a good price. Sold out almost everywhere except for some at ridiculous prices.
