I was exiting a plan last week in Pensacola Florida and a lady from 2 rows back blurted out "wow, your watch looks gorgeous" (it was late and the lighting was perfect), I said thanks it is a Breitling. She continued to talk and wanted to buy a nice watch for her husband and thought he would like it. I left by telling her that he will become addicted to them and they aren't cheap!!

After pulling an all nighter I crashed at about 7am and woke at 11am and headed to get me something non alcoholic to drink. At the store when I reached for change I instead pulled out a hand full of beer caps. Much to my surprise there was a cop at the next register. When he looked at me all he had to say was nice watch. I have been looking at the SA for a while now. SA saves the day.

:yeahthat

Can't say I've had any servers do that but a few times have had someone off the street ask me the time and then study my watch as I read the answer to them. Always found it strange that someone would ask you the time and then check to see if you are telling the truth by also looking at the watch, which incidentally is upside down  always feel it's an excuse to look at your piece - obviously in an effort to see whether it's worth stealing...okay being a bit over the top there

Good thread and I definitely agree it's a little full on for some total random to ask you how much you paid for your watch...

One is with my CSO: one of my patients, whom I disliked a lot, a young attorney-to-be of the big face type once said: Oh, that's a Breilting, how much did you spend on that? I simply ingored as if I hadn't heard. After a short while he left my family practice and told me: and you didn't even react on my question... happy that I get rid of him.
Other: another patient of mine, a young man looked at my IWC ceramic Fliegerchrono (the small one, ref. 3705, the watch that I never though would appeal to anyone at all 'coz looks liek a cheap Casio) and told me: oh man, it's an IWC isn't i, must have cost a lot, it has a perpetual calender! I simply told him it does not have a QP and the ones having that really cost a lot, but mine did not.
Regards: Robertus
PS: my daily wearer now is the Chrono Cockpit with the previous blue dial - just amazing!!!

LOL! I love the first two, I may have to use those and see what kind of look I get from them, My wife and I may just have to go out to dinner tonight! I smell a bet approaching for her and I.......

My experience with this is that the way in which the "is that a real [brand name]?" type conversation developes depends very much on which attitude you reply with.
I try to respond with a little enthusiasm like explaining which model it is and perhaps a little something about the features. Let them know you are genuinely interested. That will make people less likely to think you are showing off.

As for the question "How much did you pay for it", use the same approach. Tell them that oooh, no-no-no you never ask a guy about the price of his timepiece and say that it would be kind of like asking a woman if her boobs are real.

If you are inclined to use brush-off type replies or aren't particularly interested in making a conversation of it, here are some suggestions when someone asks if it's real:

The conversation stopper:
"Well, my dad didn't say anything about it being a fake when he gave it to me on his deathbed..."

The Letterman evasion:
"The question you should be asking is: Will it float?"

The secret service presidential whack retort:
"I could tell you, but I'd have to shoot you."

The cheezy pick-up line answer:
"I could tell you, but I'd have to nail you."

The "D'oh!" response:
"You know... I forgot to ask."

...and of course, for those of you who really know where your towel is:
"42"

Hah! we did that back in the day to our stand up full sized kegerator. Spread spackle on it and decorated :)

If you are saving them I get it. I don't save them anymore so the incoming beers cap gets bent in half and thrown into the outgoing newcastle bottle. It's kind of my 'thing' :)

Back in the day thanks for making me feel young. I still have a kererator at my house(Sam Adams Winter) :nana:
But I guess being single I have nobody to tell me to get rid of that thing OR that watch is way to expensive

When someone asks what I paid, I like to use a line from my old friend Mike McD in Rounders..."I'm sorry, John, I don't remember..." usually with a sarcastic smile...

I have had my Breitling for just two months and I was at a Mardi Gras ball over the long weekend and I was asked what model Breitling I had. I turned to see who made the comment and I was face to face with a Marine Corps Major General. I told him and he said I asked beacuse it looks different from mine. He shows me his SS Navitimer World with a black dial and SS bracelet. It was a cash bar and he told the sever that my money was no good tonight, so we had a few beers and discussed watches.

I have had people asked me how much I paid for my Rolex when I have worn it and its rude and my reply is too much and walk away...

If you were at a mardi gras ball this weekend, and I was at a mardi gras ball this weekend...it must mean we live fairly close to each other...right?
