my motors t is in the hospital for the third time in only two months! i'm currently discussing options with ad about what to do, e.g., refund, exchange, store credit.

1st service: date hung 1/2 through a change

2nd service: date hung again, and date didnt change exactly at midnight, changed between 12-12:10

3rd service: date hung again about a week after getting it back from the second servicing

after i dropped off my watch the third time, another sales person from the store (the person i talked to for the second servicing, not my usual sales person) called and said he checked out the other motors t they had on display. and that the date would change from 11:57-:12:05'ish, so there was nothing wrong with mine (i guess he didnt hear about the forever hanging date). is this typical? isnt the date supposed to change exactly at midnight? perhaps the great and powerful vanessa or thomas or admin :D could enlighten me on this, but that kind of variance on the date change doesnt sound right.

right now, i think i just want them to exchange the watch for a new model t, but if the one on display is also having weirdness with the date change, i'm a little worried. if i just get a store credit, i'm considering some combination of legende/skyland/navi world or just an olympus or 6.75 (but they dont have the silver dial) and get cash back, any suggestions?

Sorry to hear about your troubles, rhequest. If it were me, and I still really wanted the watch, I would request a brand new model be shipped from Switzerland. I'd also request they ensure perfect functioning (date change, COSC spec, etc) prior to calling me. Forget the other display model. You may have to wait a bit for the replacement, but it may prove worth it. Once you get the replacement, make sure the warrranty starts from the date you accept the replacement. I wouldn't go with what the salesperson has to say; there are some, NOT ALL, who have very little knowledge of the products they sell. Ask to speak directly to the Service Manager.

I spent half an hour at an AD trying to get the girl to demonstrate the 'alarm' function on a Fortis. After much rummaging through the cupboards for the appropriate book for clues, shaking the watch for a few minutes to wind it(!) and playing with the activation/ deactivation pusher, she gave up. Even the store manager was clueless as to it's operation.

Sorry to hear about your watch Rhequest. Hope things turn out for the better.

Those are all sweet watches, still the 6.75 and World/Legende ! However if you have your heart set on the Motors T I would wait to get a new one, anything else will feel like settling for it.

thanks for the replies everyone, i think you are the only people who truly understand my pain. :cry: well, i'm still discussing options with them, so i'll keep you all posted. i really do like the motors t, but man o'man this watch is turning into the biggest hassle. i guess i'll just appreciate it that much more if i ever get it back in fully working condition. thanks everyone.

I hope you get a fully working watch soon.

Regarding the time for the date change, I don't think that you can expect the date to change at 12 sharp. At most of the watches I have, the date starts to change at approximately ~11.58 and is fully changed at ~12.00. It takes a little while for the movement to complete the procedure, I guess. However, the date always change at the same time. There is no reason why the date should change at different times - in that case I'd say the watch is clearly malfunctioning.

I agree that the date change takes time, it occurs over a few minutes. Some movements are worse and the date change takes 10-15 minutes to occur. However the most concerning part is the date hanging. I would rhequest (pun intended) a new Motors T rather than the display model, unless the display model is absolutely 100% perfect.

as for the date change, i know the slow-rollover dates (sorry, not sure what they are called exactly) like my chrono evo take 10-15 minutes to complete, but the motors t has that quick change date (again, not sure what the correct technical term is) where the date just "snaps" down. that shouldn't take time should it? maybe, i didn't explain properly before. what happens is the date changes in a snap, but it does so at different times, e.g., the date will change at 11:57, 11:58, 12:00, 12:05, etc. that is what has me a bit worried, too. thanks for all the replies.

Jason, I've never actually checked to see when the date change occurs on my Motors. Maybe acceldebt and I could check ours to see when the date change happens if it is always at the same time or what. I think either way you should get a new one.

Hi Jason

The fact that the date doesn't change at 12 sharp is normal (it's allowed to be off a couple of minutes each way) BUT it should jump at the same minute every time!
It is not a difficult problem to fix if your date "hangs"... just a new date-changing wheel and a date disc, and you're good to go! I don't understand why some watchmakers don't just take care of it the first time, they always try to save money by not replacing any parts (when it's warranty) but at the same time, they waste soooo much time from both the customer and themselves, that it will end up costing them more!
Oh well, I'm sorry you have to go through this ordeal, and I sincerely hope they'll take care of you the right way this time!

Vanessa, thanks very much for the reply. what does it mean if the date changes at different times then? is that a cause for major concern? and, i agree, i wish i didnt have to waste so much time driving to the ad to fix this problem. i love having an excuse to stop by and look at the watches, but this is a little too much. haha

Jason, it wouldn't say it's a major concern, but it's of course an annoying one. The only thing you should worry about is the "hanging" of the date. If it jumps on a different minute every time, but within a few minutes of 12 am I wouldn't worry about it. Coz how many times are you actually watching you date jump at midnight??
So make sure the real problem is fixed with the "hanging" date. Coz that could effect the time keeping of the watch.

My Motors changes the date right at 12:00 and I can hear it and feel it click. I never really sat there and watched for it to see if it is a minute or so after 12:00 I have just felt it click and looked to see that it was 12:00.

thank you everyone for the concern and helpful information. i got back my motors t last night. they swapped out the movement for a completely new one. not a 100% satisfactory resolution, but an acceptable compromise. i asked what they would do if there is something wrong with this one, and then they told me they would either exchange it for a completely new watch or credit me and let me pick a new watch or just refund me. so i'm happy with the settlement. oh, and they gave me a new warranty starting from yesterday, so now i just have to keep a close eye on this bad boy, but it does feel nice to have it back on my wrist. and, it is such a beautiful dial. i'll post some pics once i get my camera fixed or just get a new one.
