More news for the Breitling 125 Anniversary!

Quote:
Caliber B01
Breitling crowns its 125 years of passion for chronographs with the launch of its own high-performance movement

Breitling is marking an important date in its history by unveiling Caliber B01, its first chronograph “motor” designed and built entirely in-house. It is a logical evolution for a brand that has played a major role in developing the wrist chronograph, and is counted among the leading makers of this complication. It is a perfectly consistent choice for one of the last independent Swiss watchmakers, which is thereby ensuring its freedom to maneuver and loyalty to its own criteria for excellence.
Through 125 years and five generations, Breitling has tied its name closely to the development of aviation, sports, technology, sciences and industry – all of these being areas that require reliable and accurate measuring instruments. With the B01, the company is more than ever confirming its calling to accomplish challenging feats, and beginning a new chapter in a history already replete with great moments in the air, on land and beneath the seas.

Excellent!

I'm all excited about what it's going to go in! Roll on Baselworld I say! :D

This is just an observation (and not a criticism at all) but looking at that pic, I have to say I'm slightly surprised it wasn't given a more distinctive rotor to visually differentiate it from the non-manufacture movements actually. Hardly a problem or anything, just an observation.......

I guess no see_thru case back then!

Good point. :(

The more I think about it, the more odd it seems that this new movement should look so similar visually to the existing movements. Strange really, as there is absolutely no mistaking Panerai's in-house movements (or IWC's for that matter), compared to their non-in-house ones.

Obviously all this is assuming that the picture on this thread is correct of course! The run up to Baselworld always provides plenty of rumours and counter-rumours, so maybe we (as in me!) would be best to simply wait until the event!

Don't forget that the rotor is fairly easy to change out. We likely aren't going to see some adjustable or skeletonised rotor but decoration is fairly easy if they wanted to do a DB, and it looks like some very nice cotes de Geneve on the platework.

Of course the cynic in me says that there won't be a DB though.

I hope I'll be able to see one when I get to Baselworld next month! :camera:

I strongly, very strongly hope that a day-date calendar variation shall be produced too, for those wanting that and got to use that (regarding Breitling: CSO, Bentley GT, Montbrillant Datora, regarding others: lots of ETA-Valjoux 7750 DD and 7751 versions: IWC Flieger and AT, Omega Speedy DD, TH AR Chrono DD, Fortis, Sinn, Tutima and many-many others). This does not mean that only day-date versions should be used, for those who do not like this, but at least as an option it should be produced. E. g. Tutima manufactures the very same model (F2 Chrono) with date and day-date versions too - for the same price.

Best regards to all loving the Breitling Manufacture! (And of course others too!)

Robertus

As Thomas suggested, I think the first pieces we will see will be 'normal' chronos. I'm sure that they'll have a date as that's expected, but things like big date, day / date, second timezone, etc are probably reserved for the second phase and semi perpetual / perpetual / moonphase (at least in mass produced format) will be after that.

One interesting thought - presumably there are already plans for a new tourbillon - an in house tourbillon will be expected to demonstrate haute horlogerie manufacture status.

With a haute horology price no doubt too!

For sure - but that's what it's going to take if they want to move upmarket. Look at the Zenith perpetual tourbillon minute repeater thing - $600K, but it's not about that watch, it's about how it elevates the brand.

It's a way to give instant credibility to your in house capabilities, especially if it's a twist on a traditional tourbillon cage. I know that the Mulliner tourbillon was a Breitling Chronometrie product, but it's not quite the same as putting one in your own movement.

Agreed. All of the high-end watch manufacturers produce at least one ludicrously expensive showcase piece and as you rightly say, Breitling will need to too if it wants to play with the big boys and be respected amongst the horological elite.

But for me, as a BIG Breitling fan, just having one fully in-house movement is an absolute landmark IMO. Provided it's in a case around the 46mm mark (or at least in something that wears like a 46mm watch) I will have one - no question.

I agree with you here. Have you seen the Graham-London Chronofighter RAC rotor?
