As others have said, it's definitely real, and it is definitely supposed to be SuperLuminova, so should be long lasting.

Rather than a problem due to bad lume from the factory, I suspect that the integrity of the lume has been compromised at some point, possibly due to water or other contaminations. I would definitely take it to an AD for a diagnosis and to check for any other less obvious problems - gaskets for example. From your comments it sounds like it needs a service anyway.

Put it under a very bright light for a few minutes, and then go into a completely dark room. Stay in the room for a few minutes in the dark so that your eyes can adjust to the darkness. Sometimes a faint lume is visible, but only if your eyes have adjusted.

Like I said, left it under a lamp for 5 hours when i went to bed and went into a completely dark room, and the only glow, which was VERY faint...I could kind of make out the numbers if I put it like 5 inches from my face and kind of squinted....but BARELY...which, as I said in my earlier post was useless anyway as the hands didn't glow at all. If the original owner had it serviced, it was not recorded in the little booklet. Obviously, my biggest concern is authenticity, I planned on having it serviced this weekend anyway... the $500 cost was a rude surprise, but as my gf did get it for a reasonable price, and having seen the service video posted elsewhere on the site, I felt/feel that it is not an unreasonable amount to invest in something that is supposed to "last a lifetime". But the thought of spending the hard-earned on it, with an immediate further investment of $500 more PLUS an additional cost to have it re-lumed... feeling like a bit of a sucker :(

I do want to thank everyone who has answered in this topic, I do appreciate the replies.

Just take it to an AD and have them send it in for you. Breitling will give you an estimate before they do anything to it. FYI, afaik, the "$500" number that gets tossed around here is for a chronograph.

The $500 quote is in CAN $, and was from the nearest AD to me, and I specified the model when asking for the quote... but there is a possibility he was just giving me a general quote based on chrono model and not specific to the SOP. I guess seeing as no one has heard of this problem before there is no idea on what replacing the face and hands...or having them re-lumed might cost additionally ? So parts that would need re-luming/replacing would be bezel (pearl no-glow) the hands (no-glow) and the face (no-glow) ? That can't be cheap ?
