Long story short- my fiance would like to gift me a watch for our wedding in a couple weeks. Vintage Breitlings have always caught my eye, but she's on a budget and I've been shopping around. I really, really liked this watch on eBay, but I am unsure of the model.

The listing says "Ref. 711" but I could not find any other mention of one online.

I asked the seller "Could you show me more info on the Ref. 711?" and they literally told me "don't bid on it if you don't know the 711," which leads me to wonder "Well... how am I supposed to learn about it in the first place?"

Hence why I'm here.

Any info? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the heads up; what gave it away? Just a shady response from a seller? (That would have been enough for me, but I thought I'd ask to see if there's something else I missed)

First warning flag will be that you’re not gong to get an old watch with a minty freshly printed dial.

Those seem like good pointers. I'll probably confine my listing search to domestic ones only, if only because I imagine it'd be easier to raise disputes should anything go awry.

Regarding the dial- I thought it was a bit too good to be true, hah. I've just seen so many beautiful vintage dials before, though to be fair, none of them were priced under $1k.

Anyway this is my first thread here- I hope to learn a lot on these forums. I'm into numismatics, and I appreciate the intricate beauty that time, weather, and use leaves on watches much as it does on coins. Thanks!

Actually the watch is correct for a ref 711 as it's a single pusher and single sub register w/sweep second hand. The case looks correct as does the movement which was used in other smaller Breitling chronographs of the period. The serial number would indicate 1944 which was probably the latest version of the 711. Pretty rare watch even with the nicely redone dial.

Hi there,
I would appreciate if someone could help me with some info on a watch my wife bought me a few weeks ago.
I've read some forums discussing frankenstein watches and would be keen to know how 'original' my copy is.
I know that the strap isn't original but I'd like to investigate and find out as much as I can about mine.
Many thanks in advance for any help
David

Your wife bought you a very nice and rare watch! This is a Ref 2011 Top Time, which iirc were only marketed in japan. Very cool.

I am very curious. No malice here. Why exactly these two countries? Is there any counterfeit activity regarding watches? I live in brazil, and cannot imagine any industry in our ravaged economies competing with counterfeiting in asia.
Besides, there is a really beautiful venus 175 on ebay right now, from argentina. I would buy it if I could. Would you?

it is a Venus 170, but looks fine, no sign of tampering.

many of the more "intricate" vintage Breitling fakes come from Argentina (and a handful of sellers in Uruguay), most relatively decent redials, but 100% fake; there seems to be a thriving cottage industry there; China is, as in all things, specializing in mass production, so the vintage Breitling fakes there tend to be simple threehands they produce by the dozens.

Many thanks Fred, do you think it be possible to find an original crown for this model?
Any ideas where I could go to find one.

Thanks
