If I had known about all the counterfeits out there I may never have gotten into watches. I mean the good counterfeits that is. I see fakes on the street on a weekly basis (especially in Time Square) that even a novice like me can spot. Some of the fakes I see on this site are incredible though. I wonder what the margins are?

You would have to assume that it is worthwhile. If it wasn't, they wouldn't.

True. I assume the markup on these things is ridiculous to begin with so a good counter-fit racket would probably be very profitable. My most expensive watch is only 5 grand or so and although I love it I doubt there was even close to half that in parts, labor and marketing. Just a guess though.

You are probably right jptsr1. Always best to ask as many questions as possible to trip up fakers, know the product as best you can and seek help from a forum like this one.

It's the best form of protection I think.

Why do you say that?
You are not likely to get tricked if you stick with reliable sources.
Are you concerned that because of so many fakes out there, everyone thinks that yours is fake too?

Not sure what the issue is about fakes that would deter me from getting into watches.

Getting into watches means you have enough interest in them to be a better informed consumer. The knowledge will prevent you from buying counterfeits and also keep you away from some of those crappy dept store watches.

Thats a good point. Fortunately for me I'm mentally stuck in the 5k and below range right now so I can rely on Tourneau. I'm sure if my taste ever mature and I have to turn to the used market I'll put the time in.
