Could someone please help me with ID and value of my late granfather's Breitling?
Only thing I'm sure of is that he bought it 1950. I don't know if he bought it new?
Thank you in advance!
P.s.
The watch is fully functional!

Ante, like promised here's the info.

Your grandfather's watch is not "one of the first chronographs" produced by Breitling as you wrote, these started more than 15 years earlier, the first 2-pusher chronographs were launched in 1934 - but I believe it is a case ref. 741 from the late 1930s; one of the mid-range chronograph models of that period, as it has a base metal case, not stainless steel; movement seems to be a Venus 150.

here is a catalog page from the very late 1930s or very early 1940s that shows the model, several dial designs & colors were typically available:

there is no way for us to determine the exact production year, as these records only start in 1944, but I would assume 1938-1939, just around the time when Breitling started to add model ref. numbers to all watches that your watch lacks.

PLEASE do not send it to Breitling Switzerland for restoration, they would charge you a fortune and do a mediocre or bad job, the watch is not very valuable and the €1,000 they quoted you would be around/above realistic market value for such a piece - and I am sure they would charge you much more in the end.

You have to decide what you want to do with that watch, do you want to restore it cosmetically, including a case refinishing or do you just want to preserve it and assure it functions ?

If the watch has not been serviced for many years, you should NOT use and wind it too often, oiuls will have run dry and you might damage the watch.
