Since getting my Bentley GT, I'm on the market for a Bentley 6.75 or a Supersports. But I'm looking at the Chrono-matic 49, and it seems to have a very similar case shape and size to the 49mm Bentleys. Of course, the Bentleys are much more expensive.

Is this like when Toyota puts a Lexus badge on a Camry and calls it an ES 350 or when VW puts five circles on a Passat and calls it an Audi A4?

Just wondering how much premium is priced into the Breitling for Bentley brand.

The Chrono-matics are cool, but I still think I like the contemporary styling of the Bentleys better. Just don't want to pay for them...

I am sure that there are some similarities from a production efficiency standpoint - case blanks can be shared between different models. However, they aren't simply rebadged models and the movement is distinguished by the B suffix in Bentleys to distinguish a higher level of finishing (although the merits of that are obviously up for debate). The contract between Breitling and Bentley requires the Bentley range to carry premium pricing to align with the brand positioning of Bentley and that leads Breitling to try and justify the price with enhancements of questionable benefit. The most obvious example may be the platinum bezels in the Mark VI range.

Having owned both I can say that they share very little in common and the 6.75 isn't a rebranded Chronomatic 49. The 49 is thinner and much lighter in weight than the 6.75. The movement is different as the 6.75 as a big date while the 49 has a 6 oclock date.

Visually a Toyota Camry and the Lexus ES350 are similar with nearly identical lines, the 49 and 6.75 look nothing alike and share virtually nothing in common other than the outline of the case shape.

4, Audi has 4 circles... Not 5. Just to set things straight ;-)

Badge engineering can also be applied to a reverse price point, as in VW vis Skoda. Apart from some brittle feeling interior trim & lower resale value many car journos can't really see that much difference between them, model for model, except a lower starting price. The tub & running gear are the same, it's just the rest that appears different. I know where I would put money in that case.

If they had 5 circles they could charge even more.

I have the motors and the 6.75, fairly thick and heavy watch compared to the other breitling's I cross shopped. The watch is definitely eye catching though. My 6.75 is forsale btw. Never wear it Bc I was going to gift it to someone, ended up giving them cash since at the time they could use that more.
