First post here (well, except for a WTB).

I've had my 3 week old Superocean 42 in a new Brookstone winder for just about a week. Up until 2 days ago, it was keeping good time in the winder. I was planning on starting to wear it again tomorrow, and happened to glace at it this afternoon to see that it was still running, but had lost over 5 hours!

I have the winder set to 650 TPD, bi-directional. I'll admit to not winding it before I put it on the winder, but after wearing it for two weeks straight prior to ending up on the winder I figured it was probably pretty well wound at that point. Should I wind it before I put it in the winder (which defeats the purpose a little bit, but if that's what's required, then...)

Are you sure that it is getting 650 per day?

My guess would be that the winder isn't delivering enough tpd, try setting it higher and see what happens.

I'm going to start wearing it again today, so next time it goes in the winder I'll give that a shot.

I bought a brookstone single watch winder, ended up trashing it becuz it was garbage and was loud and didn't keep watch going, but it also was $20 at the brookstone outlet. Originally it was market $100

Which is Brookstone's strategy. Build garbage winders that are virtually identical to the cheap and nasty eBay ones, but price them higher because then people will think that they must be better. If they don't sell, discount the crap out of them to where they should be priced anyway and then people will think that they are getting an incredible bargain.

In the world of winders very few companies are reputable, Brookstone is one of the worst.

What do you think about something like this? Too cheap?

Depends what you want. It will have a Chinese motor with plastic gears. If $50 is a reasonable price for you to pay to wind 2 watches for the roughly 3 months that it will likely last then go for it, and you might get lucky and have one that lasts longer before it fails (or gets so noisy that you can't stand it any more). On the other hand it may not work properly out of the box.

There is a reason why decent winders are many times more expensive than $50.

Gotcha. What would be your opinion on a good, reasonably priced winder brand or model?

Wolf is recommended in many threads here. Personally I stick to the higher end brands now having had way too many lower priced ones fail prematurely.

"Reasonably priced" is obviously very subjective, but I personally rate Orbita very highly. (And I've also done the whole, buy-em-cheap-and-chuck-em-when-they-fail throwaway models in the past myself).

Thanks for the reply. I will check out orbita.
Sounds like winders are a definite "you get what you pay for" item.

Exactly true, although IMO ALL winders are massively overpriced for what they are : it's just that you need to pay a reasonable amount to get something that is genuinely good.

That's total BS, I have had 3 Brookstone quad winders for the past 4 years and they are outstanding. Whisper quiet, inexpensive, and not one single issue.
