Right then you 'orrible lot, it's time to make your minds up.

This year we are going to have 2 competitions:

1) Best Breitling
2) Best watch

Best Breitling will happen first, followed by best watch, the Breitling entries into best watch will be determined based on the outcome of the Breitling competition - exact criteria will depend on which approach for the Breitling competition is chosen.

What I need from you now is to select the approach for the Breitling competition using the polling above. There are six choices - three main options with the ability to include or exclude last year's winner (Navitimer 01). Because I can't provide details in the poll itself for space reasons, here are the descriptions of the approaches:

1) Same as last year - 64 Breitlings, head to head competition for a week in each round, winner advances, loser goes home.

2) Category competition - Breitlings categorised per their range (Navitimer, Professional, Bentley, etc) and compete only against other watches in that range. We end up with a winner from each category - may need to have some kind of preliminary round to get down to a final 4 or 8 (depending on range) and then have a knockout. We'll need to get a bit creative on some of the ranges to avoid categories with 20 watches and categories with 4.

3) Category competition with winners competition to follow - exactly the same as #2 but with winners of each category advancing to a separate competition to determine an overall winner.

I'll leave this open for a few days to make sure that everyone has a chance to vote.

I really enjoyed last years competition (despite the fact the winner wasn't my first choice). It was fun plus I learned a lot. My vote would be option 1.

I voted for #1.

I personally think to exclude any model (such as the Navi 01) wouldn't give a true representation. Whichever won you would always have to clarify by saying, "oh but that was excluding the Navi 01".

I like the "By range, with a winners competition" idea too, but I think that would result in a fairly clear cut set outcomes.

I say let fate take it's course in the first round, and then may the best watch win!

I think the "range w/ winners competition" is great idea, but by all means include the Navi !

#1

Edit - Navi 01 included. I don't think it is clear at all that the Navi winning is a foregone conclusion. The style demographics here have changed some since last year. Some of us had to send our Navis to service in the last 12 months. :x Plus, I can see some, maybe me, nudging out the Navi on a good match-up.

While I still think the Navi 01 would be the odds on favorite to win again, I think we should include it, #1 for me.

I still think it should be by range, with four finalists entering the final four. That way we get the top navi, the top Chronomat etc all squaring off for the ultimate Breitling. JMO

Looks like a clear winner at the moment, but was expecting more votes based on last year's involvement. I get the fact that some people may not have strong feelings on the approach, but will give everyone one more chance to have their voice heard before moving on to watch selection.

a bit surprised the "by range with winners competition" is getting so little support, would eliminate pairing of very similar watches.

I like to see by range to mix it up a bit. Thanks

Agreed. I voted for 'by range with winners competiton' as I think it's better to have the finalists including models from every range, even if it may not necessarily include the most popular Breitling. Forces people to acknowledge the different purposes of each range of watch. Failing that number 1 is also fine by me. In both cases include Navi 01.

Thanks Roff, looking forward to the competition again!

Well it looks like option #1 is a runaway winner, so I guess that's what we will go with.

Based on that choice the top four Breitlings from this year's competition will go forward to the general watch competition - but that's getting ahead of ourselves. I'll lock this and 'un-sticky' it and start a new thread for the nomination of watches.
