As a result of buying my Blackbird at the David Morris boutique in the Wonder Room in Selfridge's, London my fiancee and I were sent an invitation to a champagne reception there last night.

We drove up after work and found a legal parking space in Duke Street right next to the store. When we entered the Wonder Room we were immediatley offered a glass of champagne (and fruit punch for me!) and canapes. We were then free to wander round and see everything in a really unpressured environment. It was really civilised! There were staff everywhere ready to top up the glasses and offer more canapes. They kept that part of the store open until 10 pm for guests of the event.

Having toured the whole extensive watch section we ended back at the Breitling display, which is extremely comprehensive. First she tried on a Lady Colt, which she quite liked but then the salesman brought out the Lady Cockpit. That was it! After much pondering she selected the S/S bracelet one with the Burgundy face, with Roman numerals at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 positions. It looks stunning on her.

After that we circulated again, Rachel now wearing her new Breitling! It really is a watch lover's paradise! The only non Breitling model which caught my eye was a limited edition Chophard chronograph. It is limited to 1000 examples and commemorates the Mille Miglia race (hence 1000 copies!). It has a polished black steel case with a transparent screw-in back and the strap is black, deployment style and fashioned from modified Dunlop tyre rubber. I thought it was a lovely piece.

I'll take pics of the his and hers 'Lings at the weekend.

Great night out Chris by the sound of it.

Nice to be able to wander without pressure and it resulted in a new addition so good for them too.

Look forward to the pics.

Sounds like you had a great evening!

Really good your fiancee found a watch. Possibly expensive for you at the moment, but if she's also in the game you will have no problems endulging in the world of watches... :D

She certainly enjoyed having the chance to have a really good look at almost every major brand. She dislikes the whole Rolex image thing and is not into "bling" (small B!) but was pleasantly surprised that even Gucci and Dior have some good looking pieces not encrusted with jewels!

She just loves the Lady Cockpit and I have to say it's the only Burgundy faced one I have seen (other than on the Japanese Fitting pages!) and it looks fabulous. This is the third watch I have bought her but the first expensive one. The other two are a Swiss Army one which she has been using as her everyday watch and a CK one which is really a bit of jewellery to wear with her posh frocks.

Chris,

Congratulations on getting your fiancee such a lovely watch.
Your story -- and especially the champagne part -- reminds me of
the time I visited the Patek Philippe dealership in St. Thomas, Virgin
Islands.

With no intention to buy, I entered the lovely little shop wearing my
trusty Evo. The sales manager, who greeted me immediately and
ushered me to the Patek display, saw the Breitling on my wrist and,
with a smile, lifted his wrist to show me what he was wearing:
a diamond-bezeled white-dialed Super Avenger. Ah yes! We were
brothers joined at the wrist.

" A beautiful piece," I said, "but I thought you'd be wearing one of
those." I pointed at the glittering Pateks in the case.

"It'll be a long time before I can afford one of those," he said,
laughing. "Besides I like a large watch; that's why I wear a Breitling."

He then proceded to try to sell me a Patek Philippe -- first an Annual
Calendar, then a Gondolo or two. No sale. He knew I wasn't there
to buy, but I think he had as much fun trying to sell as I had just
listening to his pitch.

Before I left, he gave me tons of literature, and a chilled bottle of
rose. We parted best of friends, and someday I shall return -- maybe
to buy.

Anyway, I hope your fiancee has many years of joy with her new
Ling.

Steve :)

Excellent story, and a great example of how a business successfully drives sales. Bravo to you both, everyone got what they wanted, you two parted with a life-long souvenir. :D

If Rachel had not been there I might have been a bit more plastic-happy! :D

Other than the Chopard Mille Miglia Limited Edition though most of the watches I liked were in the Breitling display cabinets! I did try on a U Boat model, which David Morris has just introduced in the Wonder Room. It was just way too big for my wrist but had great comedy value! It would certainly meet Jeremy Clarkson's criteria for being uncomplicated and easy to read without glasses!

Feldmar Watch in LA. I was there the other day and had a look at them for the first time. They look pretty neat (esp. the black dial with orange numbers), but they are HUGE. They also dont seem to be as well made as they should for the price. The leather strap in particular, looked really cheapy.

I am drooling with envy! I am one of the few guys I know who loves to shop, and London is definitely top of the list!
Have to agree with you about the Chopard. There is one of those LE in the display window at a local jeweler here in Vancouver, at Pacific Centre Mall. I love the looks of that watch! I have not dared to venture into the store and ask the price. However, I am going down today, and I do know one of the ladies well there, so I might ask to see it!
I do have a Breitling Blacksteel, though, and I cannot honestly say that I like the Chopard any better, but still worth a look!

Cheers,
Carl

The U-Boat watches are a night and day difference compared to Breitling watches. U-Boat is definitely not a watch that I see my dad wearing. I guess what I am trying to say is that U-Boat is a little more on the trendy, hip side of the spectrum. I personally love the brand and enjoy wearing my U-Boat, but larger watches are a little bit easier to wear when you are 6'6" 225lbs. You either love or hate this watch. I would have to agree with some of the comments about the price and leather band. Over all it is a nice watch, but the next watch I purchase will be a Breitling! Here is a picture for those who have not seen one matched up next to a Breitling.
