you mean the subdials? one for seconds, one for hours and the other for minutes.

Kind of like a stop watch on your watch. Search chronograph.

chronograph subdial at 12 counts up to 30 elapsed minutes
chonograph subdial a 6 counts up to 12 elapsed hours
subdial at 9 provided "running seconds"
center second hand provides chronograph seconds
pusher at 2 starts and stops the chronograph
pusher at 4 resets all 3 chrono hands.

on this Breitling and many/most other chronograph watches,
though some count chrono minutes up to 45 minutes

edited post while Roff was answering in depth, a bit redundant now.

9 o'clock sub = running seconds
12 o'clock sub = chrono minutes
6 o'clock sub = chrono hours.

Chrono subs work in conjunction with the central seconds (chrono seconds) for the chronograph / stopwatch function.

Please read the deifnition of "chronograph" from the glossary section - http://www.breitlingsource.com/watch_te ... ry.shtml#c - always a good place to start.

This has been covered pretty well, but I'll just add a couple things. When I was new to chronographs, I was surprised to find out that the center sweep hand is used to track seconds in chronograph mode. Unless you're using the chronograph, the sweep hand remains stationary. (Typically it is at the 12:00 position, but it could be elsewhere if you don't reset the chronograph.) Therefore, the actual "running" seconds are displayed via a subdial.

Also, in response to your question about the 30-minute dial, yes, it shows elapsed minutes for the chronograph section. The hour totalizer will show a half-hour has elapsed when the minute totalizer is back to zero. You basically add the two (plus the seconds on the sweep hand) to get the total elapsed time. It's a bit of a clumsy way of tracking time, especially if you're used to a digital stopwatch, but once you get used to it, it's workable. (Truth be told, I never got so used to it that I actually found it completely easy to read - it was just less confusing. The new Omega chronographs, which track minutes and hours on the same dial - like a clock face - are much more intuitive, imo.)

You'd better breathe before Friday, or you'll never get to enjoy your first Breitling.
