I'd only tell someone what my watch cost if they liked it so much they really wanted to buy one for themselves. Then it's just helpful information, not a noserub or a gloat or anything else.

Fact is for me, I just see a beautiful piece of craftmanship, whether it's an Oris (the same jewelled innards as a lot of brands 3 times the price), a Breitling or something even more expensive.

That makes sense - I have no issue sharing the price of my pieces on here because that's helpful information - we all know the approximate prices anyway, and we aren't going to view someone with a Mulliner any different than someone with a Colt Quartz - we're all Breitling lovers.

At the same time I wouldn't generally tell someone what it cost if they asked me straight out.

Here is a typical conversation for me if I am wearing my Ling...

"Oh, what kind of watch is that?"

"It's a Breitling"

"Neat"

I swear to God NO ONE around here knows about or has heard of Breitling before! I see ads all the time for Rolex ADs around here, even billboards, but there are 2 Breitling ADs in my entire state. Even my Uncle who owns a Rolex just looks at my watch, reads it, and says, "Breilting, eh?"

Not that I'm trying to impress anybody, but it seems like nobody has heard of Breilting around here.

Thanks guys, that's some interesting discussion, I'm glad everyone understood where I was coming from. It's awkward to pause in the middle of a conversation because I don't know what phrase to use to describe the cost range of my watch in a way that the other person can relate to.

To continue a train of thought that someone brought up, I hate it when people say, "wow, I wish I was rich like you so I could spend $3,000 on a watch." One of my co-workers told me that and I told him that if he didn't buy a $5,400 plasma TV, he could just about buy 2 Breitlings. Of course, he said no way, I need my plasma... I told him that both my TVs were free, we just disagree on where our disposable income should go. This shows that everyone has something that they are willing to spend money on, it's just that most people wouldn't consider a watch to be one of those things.

Thats a good point. I hate having to explain my frivolous purchases. Sure, its expensive, but no worse than my plasma, or my laptop thats gonna be obsolete in a few years anyways. How come nobody pesters us about these things? At least a B retains some value (esp. if bought used), and lasts a lifetime if treated well.

This is an interesting discussion. Most of my watches wouldn't be recognized by your average Joe, and I prefer that. That's why I could never own a two-tone Datejust -- everyone in the world knows what that is. I usually wear my Superocean on a diver strap which makes it look like a Seiko or something to the vast majority of the world. I buy watches for me, not so anyone else thinks I'm cool.

Having said that, I love when another watch nerd says "hey, nice Speedmaster!" :D

When someone asks, I just tell then it was money well spent. I bought mine as gift for finishing grad school so it's more of a sign of accomplishment than anything else. I have no problem discussing the price with anyone I meet who knows about watches, but for some people who just ask and would be surprised if I said any amount over $1000, I just say I saved up for awhile before I got mine.

I think I may adopt some of the strategy I have read here. I am almost one year with my SA and have just realized that I am getting too comfortable talking about the price. I hope I have not come off as that "snob"! I'll just keep it quiet from now on.

People ask me often, and I will tell them.

I explain why they are a little more than your average watch or show them how they are made and tell them about the quality of the materials used. They are mostly understanding, but always tend to say "I don't think I could spend that much on a watch."

I agree with anything else you said, but for the above I disagree. "High end" for me has more to do with quality than cost. I might be wrong, but that's my opinion.

I was at an sunglass store a few years back, looking at some of the watches. The owner comes over to help me, then kind of frowns when I say that I'm looking for an inexpensive quartz watch, while looking at $400 Oakleys. He looks at my Chrono Avenger, asks how much it costs. When I tell him, he says wow why don't you wear it on the top of your wrist so you can show it off (I wear my watches on the inside of the wrist). I told him that I bought the watch for me, not to show off. He didn't get it...

Agreed in principal Aleister, I guess what I mean is that for the amount you pay for a Breitling you get an amazing piece of engineering, especially in the bracelet. My Rolex wearing best mate was astounded at the quality of my Navitimer Heritage.
