Dell are pretty useless, why I personally would have bought an aftermarket replacement just to test the problem.

Why was the laptop so expensive Sharkie? For typical college work, I think there are plenty $600-$800 range suitable laptops which is almost disposable on an annual basis.

First thing, ask her to get a Dropbox account (2GB free, $10/month for 50GB) -- and move (or at least copy) ALL her work to the cloud. That way in an emergency, go to BestBuy, grab a new laptop, install softwares, and she'll be back up & running in no time.

Thanks for the advice. She has a 2 gig external hard drive. The present problem is the charger cord sits so loosely that sometimes before she can save her research as she is writing a paper, the cord slightly dislodges and work gets lost. These charger cords aren't designed to function as power cords. FedEx shows the 9 cell battery on time for tomorrow delivery. I had been planning to get her an extended life battery anyway and even if the current 6 cell isn't the problem it is a good idea to have a back up battery.

As for the expense, I wanted a business class laptop for her and they can't be had at Best Buy - just Inspirion models. Plus you start with a $600 model and I added a crap load of extra ram, business office and then all those great Dell warranties! It adds up!!! Plus, she is my one and only. The cost of the laptop was no big deal. The problem has been Dell's service. But no more rants about that.

Buy an Mac. I'm fully converted. They are a bit more expensive up front but are bullet proof and hardly ever have technical issues. If you get AppleCare they will treat you to some of the best technical service in the industry if a problem should arise. And with the iCloud, there's no worry about losing important data.
