Apart from price though, would it really make a difference to your next purchase IF it were assembled under licence in China: with all the appropriate QC & warranty etc.? Would it put you off from buying it? Just curious...

Yep, too much of the crap I buy already is made in China. I want the watch that costs me thousands to actually be made in Switzerland.

I think that it comes down to skills rather than locations. In Switzerland there are watchmaking schools and apprenticeships - heck you can take an engineering degree with a focus on watchmaking, and that provides a level of skills and experience that are just not widely found elsewhere. Mass assembly of pieces elsewhere (whether China or any other country) wouldn't allow for the same skill level of workers.

Let me say I agree with the above statment made by Roffensian 100% . that being said !

Why would any one buy a watch built in china by a Swiss company ? Chinese workers work for rice and shelter and have no stake in assembling a piece they can be proud to say they built.

The problem is 2 fold First to many people think the Chinese mind set and work ethics is the same as the Japanese Wrong !! And who amongst us can afford to buy cheap Chinese made any thing ?

I would much prefer to buy something assembled by craftsmen. .Come on think how many of us know people who shop at Wal-Mart hell we all do probably ,wouldn't it be nice to buy a Navitimer for $400.00 there and have it last a year or 2 OH Crap some people already do there called fakes and replicas .

No I'm sorry I can not afford cheap Chinese products ,just to replace them every few years . I would prefer to pay a premium price with the knowledge it will last long enough to hand it down to my kids . I love Swiss watches, hand made ones . Not there inferior ugly Chinese twins.

Assembled is quite unambiguous to me. It MUST be assembled in Switzerland. Period. Who cares if some component parts that go into final assembly come from elsewhere? It's not as though you can import the Chrono module to slap on a Swiss three hand movement and still call it Swiss Made.

I've read claims before that the pre-assembly or even final assembly of ETA movements is done in secret in China. Yeah, and the factories are gaurded by Yetis.

I can attest to seeing the Yeti...not sure what they were guarding tho-

A fair point. I'll rephrase: "assembled" is clear in meaning. "Made" is not. "Made" could just mean assembled, or it could mean something else, like in the legal requirements of what constitutes a "Swiss made" watch (assembly plus requisite minimum number of Swiss-manufactured parts). Either way, I don't think Simon and I were off topic talking about Chinese-made watches as opposed to Chinese-assembled watches.

No. Then it's just what Americans think Chinese food is.

Fair point.

Let me ask then what are all those pizzas or pasta found all over that are not made by Italians?

OK, if this question is going to be taken seriously...

The analogy doesn't hold up. "Chinese food," "Italian food," etc., are generic food categories. They each refer to a type of cuisine, irrespective of who makes it, or where it is made. Lo mein is Chinese food, and spaghetti carbonara is Italian food, regardless of whether it's made in China or Italy by Chinese or Italians, or Indians, Americans, Africans, or whomever. If we apply the same concept to categories of watches, then a three-hand watch would be a category, a chronograph would be a category, a dive watch would be a category, etc. A chronograph is a chronograph whether it is made in China or Mongolia. But a Swiss watch isn't a generic category. It's not like Swiss cheese, an excellent form of which is made in Wisconsin. Saying a watch is "Swiss" implies a place of manufacture or assembly, not a style or type; the implication is made explicit if you say a watch is "Swiss made." So yeah...pizza is pizza, whether it comes from Naples or New York. A Swiss watch has to come from Switzerland.

Good question - Some don't think Taco Bell is Mexican food, but what if the Taco Bell is located in Mexico, is it now by default considered Mexican food?

I have trouble labeling it as any kind of food. And no, pizza hut in Italy still isn't Italian food.

Maybe because there is no Pizza Hut in Italy. For obvious reasons.

I didn't think there would be but I couldn't think of anything else.
