Helps to protect the lense when not in use I would assume.

Well, I'm wondering if it would be more effective as an alignment tool such as a straight edge or something?

I was wondering that too. :huh

Seems odd for a lens protector, and if it was an alignment tool why go straight across the middle as it's pretty thick, plus its metal so it could scratch the watch if it gets too close. Very odd.

Looks like a tool to unscrew the lens for replacement purposes.

That makes sense. Generally the front lense can be changed out to alter the magnification, it's generally just a knurled edge that you grip to twist.
