Hello All,
Been a while since I sold the SuperOcean and I thought I did not belong ..... untill I started reading about all the Breitlingless members here! I have just added a JLC Reverso Grande Date to the collection (sorry no Breitling yet).

The 3 members of the Holy Trinity are - Patek Philippe (The undisputed KING), Vacheron Constantin (The retired King and grandfather) and Audemars Piguet (The ambitious Prince).

Which is best? Personally - stay away from the ROO - it is too "new money"
The classic Royal Oak is a watch worth obtaining... it is classy and attracts smiles from the right type of ladies (slightly older early 40s Asian beauties). The ROO attracts the "gold digger" type of woman.

My Royal Oak is a Two Tone piece and has the grey waffle dial. Classy yet elegant.

I also own a vintage Vacheron & Constantin. The watch is from 1960. This was when Vacheron was ahead of Patek in the quality/detail race for the title as KING. The Vacheron was a much classier watch in its day.... god forbid how times have changed. The casualisation of society is to blame. The Vacheron is the ultimate dress watch.

The Patek Philippe I own is a classic reincarnation.... it is as classy as the Merecedes-Benz 230SL Pagoda I owned for a time. The Patek 5107 is a GRANDE version - larger than the original 1960s interruptation - yet it is 1960s charm with its 1960s hands, classic dial configuration and shape of the case.

Personally - I would stay away from Trinity Sports watches - Rolex and Omega make excellent pieces for much less money. The Trinity is a very special type of membership - which is best reserved for a dress watch.

I own the full Trinity - AP, PP, VC and my favorite is the Vacheron & Constantin (the & signifies old money as opposed to noveau riche tackiness).

I am a new fan of Jaeger-LeCoultre.
I have been a long established fan of the brand for many years. Unfortuntately due to the low production numbers of JLC they are not so available on the 2ndary market like Rolex or Omega. I buy most of my watches used - seeking bang per $. A oversize JLC is a very rare item on the used market. They are very scarce!

JLC has always been excellent value for money. I read interestingly somewhere on this forum that a person was saying that JLC was not in the same class as PP, AP, and VC. This shocks me! As you will discover JLC made many base movements for these 3 makers. Infact the famous AP movement ref 2003 (also know as Vacheron Constantin movement K1003) is a JLC base movement.

JLC is also the movement maker of choice for the famous Cartier Tank watch.

JLC is an outstanding brand. Super Super cool! (like Steven McQueen).

The VC is nice. Lovely in fact.

The two tone RO doesn't look "new money," it looks no money. It's always reminded me of an orphan leg shackle searcing in vain for it's twin.

Anyway, it is always a pleasure when you check in and tell us about the stuff you used to own.

Not true...I see used JLCs for sale all the time. Just take a look over on TZ on the sales forums and you will see loads of them.




Well...at least we agree on one thing.

I guess it depends on what you classify as a sports watch. They Royal Oak is widely considered the first luxury sports watch. The Reverso was, of course, designed for polo players. The fact that they can be sport and dress makes them special. Same with the VC Overseas, which in newest form, is a watch I would love to own.

The ROO is not traditional, but it's a well crafted modern sports watch, which tends to be beefier. I like the stainless version though right now, I'm not into any gold watch except for perhaps rose gold. Some of the blingier iterations of it, I don't much care for either. Of course, Breitlings are subject to the same criticisms.

JLCs are great watches and I like the Reverso, but I think it's a difficult visual fit if your wrist is larger than 7 1/2 inches. I haven't given up on it yet, though. They make as good a movement as any in the market.

By the way, the ghost of Abraham-Louis Breguet would like a word with you...

Hey, I dated old money for 4 years in college and High School. Dinner was like the boat scene in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Not all it's cracked up to be.

what is the focus of your watch collection, besides spending old (your parent´s) money ?
this particular RO might go well with the Silver Spur, though.

Let's define something here. A one or two generation inheritance does NOT constitute old money. In.the minds of those with old money anything less than several generations removed from actual entrepreneurial effort us still nouveau riche. Let us not equate Blunderhead with old money because mommy and daddy have a Rolls, allegedly.
