I haven't seen anyone suggest it was corner cutting for financial reasons. On some of the Rolex forums, some people have wondered how this detail "slipped past" the design crew, suggesting that it was an oversight of some kind. Seems like we're of the opinion it was intentional, and it's just a subjective call whether or not it was a good choice.

King of Ling made mention of cutting corners - that is why I said what I did.

IMO, this has gotten to be a pretty spirited discussion over something so trivial. Like anything else in life, if you like it, then buy it. If you don't, then don't. IMO, this issue of the hands revolves around aesthetics - it has nothing to do with the functionality of the watch and therefore, it's a non-argument for me.

Isn't that what I said - IMO. Aesthetics are quite important to most in the watch world. IMO it is an aesthetic mistake, that's all. No reason to infer more in something written than what is written.

I'm not heated over this at all. I'm new to Rolex, so this is all educational and interesting to me. Just to be clear, though, I wasn't saying they cut corners. I said, in response to Martini, that if all Rolex did was simply transfer the hands of the smaller model onto the newer model without giving it any thought, then they weren't doing what they needed to do to make the new design all it could be. I would view that more as sloppy design work, rather than trying to save money. If, conversely, the designers thought it through and decided, for whatever reason, that the old hands worked well on the new dial, then that's their call. It's my call whether or not I like it, but I won't accuse them of negligently dropping the ball. On balance, I like the new Explorer. In comparing the old and new models, though, I do think the proportions of hand to dial were better on the old model. That doesn't mean the new model sucks, but it's something for me to consider in evaluating the new model relative to other options I'm considering.

Speaking of other options I'm considering, the proportions of the hands on the Sub show how they got it right...IMO.

The hands do look stupid in pictures but it's not really as noticeable in person, that's just my opinion though. It's a cool watch with a great history, one of these and a Speedy pro would be a couple of great iconic watches that I'd love to have one day. Oh, and a Sub.

Just ran over to my Rolex AD and saw the Explorer in person. I dare say, there may be a new grail in town.
