To the OP: I highly advise you don't follow Sergio's advice to ask to have the bracelet sized of every watch you try on.

To the OP: Look into watches with straps also, they are very easy to size, and not an inconvenience for anyone.

General answer as I'm tired/old.

To OP:

You are spending quite a lot of money on a great watch, do not worry about etiquette (or indeed Etiquette) either.

I remember 10 years ago going into Mallorys in Bath to buy a new strap. I was doing up one of my houses so 3 days growth, torn jeans and covered in paint. I asked the (older) salesman for a Breitling strap and he asked me if I really wanted a 'OEM' @ £50 then.

Just then the Big Store Manager passed by and said 'How goes Alan?' (I'd bought several stones from him over the years) said salesman died.

I think Lingman would sum it up as ...'it's your watch, your money buying the watch, buy the kin watch'.

Enjoy your buying exp.

If you're going to spend a large sum of money on a watch why not ask them to size it???? Who cares what it takes to size a watch, if they want the business then they should offer to size it without hesitation. Do you shop for shoes that's are 4 sizes too big or a suit that's huge??? No, you try on a size that fits and then decide.

Is it ok to try to wind the watch or press the pushers????? WHAT!?!?!? Would you buy a car without test driving it? Don't think too much into it, put the watch on, have it sized, play with it, and if you like it buy it.....if you don't keep trying them on until one calls out to you.

Well....

CSO & Jackson...you two can conduct yourself at your AD the way you see fit. I'm speaking from experience that having a watch sized before purchasing works. I went into my AD last year dead set on buying a Sub Anniversay LV. I had it sized and hated it, the clasp sucked and the bracelet felt like crap. It did NOT feel that way when it was 3 links too big and dangling from my wrist. Having it size was the right thing to do and saved me a major headache. I then had the AD sized a GMT IIc and it felt 100x better and I bought it. If you're too timid to ask for it to be sized then that's your problem, but it works for me.

There is a member on here who bought a Deepsea, got it home, and hated the way the bracelet tappered down to 18mm. It didn't sit right on his wrist, such a large watch tappering down to 18mm didn't feel right. Had it been sized properly at the AD before purchasing he could have realized the issue ahead of time.

Neither of you have provided ONE reason why sizing a watch (that you're interested in buying) is the wrong thing to do. Because it takes too much time?? These guys are professionals, if they can't have a watch sized in 2 minutes by their watchmakers, find a new AD.

Serge, first off my name is sco, not a big deal and kind of confusing as I own a CSO. Secondly, I ask that you please go back and read every one of my posts that are in 100% agreement with you. Again, if you are serious about buying a watch, by all means have it sized.

Fine, agreed, let's move on and get back to the OPs question then. There has been two pages of crap about why sizing a watch (that you're interested in buying) is a good idea before actually buying it.

:yeahthat I'm sure there's a certain amount of winding up going on here, but as we are seeing, these things have a nasty habit of getting out of hand, so let's all take a step back and just be cool.

And just to add my comments on this already waaaay too long and done to death topic - I personally never ask an AD to ever size any bracelet, even after I've bought it! Most of the AD's I've come across are so cack-handed and seem to have such little respect for the watches that I wouldn't let them adjust the volume on my TV, let alone adjust a bracelet. I've taken this view ever since my primary AD, who I've known and trusted for years, put some whopping scratches on the lugs of my first Navi World just by changing a leather strap. Empirical evidence would suggest I'm somewhat more careful with bracelet adjustment than they are.

Additionally, while I can't see a problem with asking an AD to size a prospective watch for you, I also personally can't see what extra it would bring in terms of deciding if the watch is for you or not. To me, I've always had a perfectly good idea just by holding the strap tight under my wrist when trying it on.......... but that's just me, and I thoroughly appreciate that not everyone is the same. Having said, that if your AD is happy to size a bracelet for you before you've even bought it, then great, why not.

With all due respect, and has already been pointed out by others, this topic has been completely twisted and I'm assuming some of you may be enjoying a cocktail (or 3) as you post today.

In summary.

The OP asked about "shopper etiquette."

One member told the OP to have any watch he likes sized and to play with it.

The general concensus is, no, etiquette would dictate to not have every watch you like sized unless you are interested in purchasing it.

The end.

Not the end - I am extremely troubled and befuddled by all this going into the store and trying on suits and shoes horseshit. What century is this anyway? Wait for a killer sale on JosaBank or BrooksBothers, surf, click add to cart and move on. I don't need to try on jack - a josabank Signature Gold 44 regular fits me every time.

As for shoes, gentlemen please get a grip. Allen Edmunds or J&M, 10&1/2 medium width, click add to cart.

Who tries stuff on anymore??? I am so angry and disturbed by this thread I fart in your general direction!!

Where are you guys reading this crap??? Neither bronco nor I said to have "any" or "every" watched sized!!

Talk about beating a dead horse. if I'm interested in buying a watch I have no problem asking for it to be sized, to play with the Chrono, walk around with it on my wrist, etc. If I have no interest in buying let's say a Planet Ocean I wouldn't bother asking for it to be sized.

If that is bad etiquette then so be it. How many of us have gone into an AD to try on a watch, come home, call fear or jnelson And buy the watch. Is that bad etiquette?
No. Lightening up guys.

It is possible that you may be more awesome than you know! 10 1/2 medium is my size too.

i was at an AD in Dallas and got the chance to try on the JLC minute repeater. I really wanted to wind it up and hear the chimes, but I felt it was sort of bad form, and didn't even ask.
