Most items at costco work on a very small margin 14% across the board, I'm sure the watches and fine jewelry have a higher mark up! Costco makes most of their profit through the membership and that's up front cash money, so it doesn't really matter what you buy there you've already gave them there cash flow for the year! I read a story about just what the membership funds bring in a year, it's a crazy amount of money! After that they can sell all they want at low margins and still make a fortune!!

I read something along those lines as well. Markups basically cover the store's overhead and the memberships are where the money is at.

BTW, I love Costco. Its probably my favorite store.

i see where you are going Fear. But in costcos case to pick up a few hundred pieces to make the margin that they would to me seems pointless. and i am sure they're not paying the executives over there for coming up with the brilliant idea of selling these pieces JMO

I talked to one of their buyers about this. I bought a couple of Tags as gifts from them. He told me that they are obviously NOT AD's. But they will back every watch they sell , same if not better than an AD. Let me give you an example. One of the Tags I bought was for my brother. A little over a year had passed. It started to run slow. I took it in and they gave me full credit towards a new one. I ended up buying him a new version. :)

The buyer said that they select watches for the stores based on the demographic, income level of the community it's in. My Costco carries some pretty expensive ones. Seen some Breitling Navis with diamond bezels, Rolexes etc. The prices are way below AD's. I would suggest for anyone, that it's safe to buy from them !

Costco has been carrying more and more high end watches as time goes on, so evidently it must be successful to some degree. A big part of Costco's strategy is the trust they build with the consumer. They are able to sell all kinds of products because consumers trust them to make it right if something goes wrong. They also target the middle class and above: people who are interested in quality goods at cheaper prices.

So they have the right kind of people coming into their store who would be interested in jewelry and watches, and they have a long term relationship that they can bank on. My guess is that their carrying costs are substantially lower than a jewelers because of the size of their business (big big businesses get better loan rates) and the size of their stores (the jewelry/watch case occupies an incredibly small and cheap footprint). So in a bizarre way it kind of make sense, but it is bizarre.

For those of you with concerns, I would take Costco's warranty over anything any 2 bit AD offers me. I have bought multiple GENS from them and have never had an issue with service. I took one back after 2 years, because it was acting up. They offered me a full refund, and I took it. Upgraded to a better watch. They are the Nordstrom of Big Warehouse stores.
