So a friend comes to me, knowing I'm into watches, and says, "Palantas, I'm looking to get a watch for my boyfriend. I only want to spend about $200. What do you recommend?"

How would you answer this question? Specifically, what brands would you recommend at that price point?

I'm thinking Seiko or maybe Citizen. I actually had a Wenger, still have one actually, that was around $200. I wasn't into watches when I got it and really liked it, plus it's been running fine for the past 5 or 6 years, so I'd probably go Wenger.

Seconding Citizen, mum had one that ran for years and years without problems, and several of my friends have had them, too.

a luminox ColorMark. Large(44mm), inexpensive, and pretty popular.

Citizen's one I hadn't considered. Thanks. I suggested Luminox and Victorinox.

While that might be an option for one of us, I don't think girlfriend is gonna go out looking for a used watch as a present for her guy.

It's not used, it's "pre-loved vintage"!

Some people are very fond of that expression.

I had a Citizen a few years ago, they're decent watches with Japanese movements.

In that range you are obviously not going to get a high-end watch. For $200 i would look at more of a fashion watch (michael Kors) or perhaps something useful like a casio g-shock.

Id try to get an idea of what type of watch this guys is looking for. Dressy, digi like a G-shock, sporty etc. Should be much easier to narrow it down that way.

What about an Invicta Submariner? :poke: ...not.

I'm fairly sure that before talking to me, she was unaware that watches come in different styles. Watches are just watches.

Skagan is another brand that she could consider
