I think it's akin to the Tiffany's blue boxes, brand recognition; not so much the model.

I respect your opinion. I do see your point if it was lesser of a watch. But for Breitling? Nope. I feel like presentation upon arrival is very important. Being in the Cosmetic Packaging industry one thing that I can say from and advertising standpoint, the packaging does sell the product. NOT the product itself. Now do I think that is is even comparable to compare Watch and Perfumes....NO. But people still do care about presentation.

Dont get me wrong this will never stop me from buying Breitlings, because I have my next few all ready picked out :lingsrock: ....but I just wanted to see if anyone else was ever thinking what I was thinking about last night.
:D

The very significant difference with watches is that you very rarely see the packaging until you have already committed to buying the product. Unlike most consumer goods the packaging is completely irrelvant to the actual sale.

Very True!

I Just Want To Add That When Buying Pre-Owned From Tourneau, One Never Gets Any Of The Original Box Or Papers.

However, One Can Get A Good Deal Every Once In-A-While, With A One Year Warranty And The Watch Does Get Shipped Back To Breitling From Tourneau!

(Had An Issue With Both The 50th Anniversary and The 1461/52 And In Both Occasions Tourneau Sent The Watches Back To Breitling!)

However, I Have The Correct Box For The 1461/52 From A Previous Navitimer Of The Same Time Period That I Had Once Owned - Yet At The End Of The Day Who Cares, It's Not Like Anyone Is Ever Going To See The Box. The Box Simply Gets Tucked Away Somewhere!

As A Result Lack Of Original Box Or Papers When Buying A Watch From An Authorized Dealer Would Not Deter Me From Making The Said Purchase! :poke:

Cheers,

Enezdez

Enezdez, looks like you got a little SHIFT happy in that paragraph! :D

For the price of the mulliner I would expect a box of that caliber.

The inner and outer boxes for the B4Bs are different.

Also the bakelite inner boxes are by no means cheap. My Pam and IWCs look wooden (I'd heard so much about the Panerai pear wood box), but both are the absolute thinnest veneer I've seen. And seem to be on "metal finished" plastic.

I do agree the intitial presentation is cool and all, but after that the entire thing goes in one of my watch box storage boxes for safe keeping. Out of sight, out of mind.

Again though, the Bakelite boxes aren't, in my view anyway, cheap or particularly insubstantial. There is nothing special about a Rolex box. The IWC boxes were all look and no substance. Same for the Breguet. If I want a dresser display box, I'd just buy one or have one made. That way I can choose if and when to spend the extra jack.

To me the box is just the icing on the cake of a package. But as RJ and others have said I'd rather have a watch come in a paper bag than in some incredibly ornate box that pushed the price up considerably.

That said, I like the Breitling Bakelite box a lot, and it has improved immeasurably over the years. A few years ago the hinges were prone of failure, but nowadays they are very nice indeed. I also have an unused walnut Bentley box much like the one FEAR posted, although mine was designed for a standard gold Bentley. It's a very nice thing.

In terms of other manufacturers, Blancpain make some of the nicest wood boxes around (provided you buy something other than the Fifty Fathoms of course). Most of them have superb marquetry work on them and are designed to be used a humidor, which is great if you usually just chuck your watch boxes in a cupboard after you buy them.

I have two wooden breitling boxes.
One that the AD give me a B4B box, and the other when I bought the navi 125. That navi came with a bakelite box but when I said "always the same box, I have the closet full of the same boxes" they changed the box. And told me that the box is for breitling's gold watches.

I've seen the emergency box and is really nice, and also the tourbillon, and there's another one, for B4B mark VI complications 29 that has a watchwinder inside.

Cuervo Y Sobrinos watches come in a wooden cigar humidor box. I'm not a smoker but that's a pretty cool idea.
