How is it possible?? I just took padi diving course and the one thing the instructor repeated over and over (and over) was "never hold your breath" underwater so the air in your lungs can equalize. 214m in one breath?? That's CRAZY!!!

Love his swim goggles on the homepage... :lingsrock:

I'd never heard of this guy till today.

The only free-divers I really knew of were the legendary Umberto Pelizzari and "Pipin" Ferreras (who I saw a 30 min special on TV when I was a kid), and Tanya Streeter.

But Nitsch is in a world of his own!

Very interesting story, maybe Breitling is on to something. I would have liked to see his cockpit picture with a Navitimer or Aerospace and an underwater pic with the SO II. I like the idea of a less well known 'spokes-person' yet very uniquely qualified, more genuine to me.

Does he swim down and up, or is he assisted on the descent?

DONT HOLD YOUR BREATH WHILE ASCENDING, IT EXPANDS, BUT NOT WHILE DESCENDING

nice glasses

I worry about being able to hold my breath for 60 ft when diving.

I believe he has air on the way down and goes without air on the ascention

Not the other way? Doesn't he need decompression stops on the way up?

Free diving is total different to scuba as the air you take down is the same breath you come back up with. Therefore it gets compressed on the way down and re-expands to the same volume is was at the start when you come back up. so you dont have the same problem you'd have if you held your breath when scuba diving.

It's an absolutely insane sport. There's various different disciplines, ranging from assisted descent, with fins, without fins, etc. There's one where you just basically hold your breath while being absolutely motionless in a pool. The World Record holder (I forget his name, but it's not Nitsch) for that one held his breath for over 11 minutes!!!
