I recently purchased a Breitling PLUTON and took it in to have the battery replaced and the watch man thought that this watch was not authentic because it had BREITLING JAPAN written on a metal part of the inside. I have done a little research and think I have found that Breitling used a Japan Quartz movement in some of their watches. (This watch does have a digital display near the bottom of the face.)

Does anyone know if this is true? The watch was purchased from a reputable dealer in New Jersey in 1997 according to the man I purchased it from. I also have the warranty card, pamphlets and boxes so I assumed it was authentic. I just want to be sure because it is a gift for my husband.

Hi and welcome to the site. Breitling did use movements produced in Japan for the Pluton. It's real.

It's true. Some models were produced with Miyota Japanese movements, including the Pluton. Breitling doesn't like admitting it nowadays, but there's no reason why a Japanese movement indicates a fake and it sounds like you have all of the paperwork so no reason for concern.

Even the AD watchmakers can be clueless. An Omega AD watchmaker once refused to even remove a link on the bracelet of my wife's authentic Schumacher SE Speedmaster (complete with all boxes, warranty paperwork, manuals, special display stand, and our certified insurance appraisal which includes a photo of the Omega 1141 movement inside) because she (the watchmaker) was 100% sure it was fake.

Her rationale? She had worked their for over 5 years and had never seen one like that before.

The watch was 10 over years old, and a special edition version that was only made for 3 years. I don't mind people who are ignorant (lest I be looking in the mirror all too often), but it's when they are aggressively stupid that it really pisses me off.

In retrospect, what I should have done was pitch a royal fit and claim that I had purchased it from that very AD 10 years ago. "What?! You sold me a fake??!!!!!"
