Maybe I was being a touch cynical...

Roff's point about the generational nature of a great timepeice is one that really tugs at my heartstrings and, in my mind, is one of the biggest reasons to own one. There are few things more satisfying than owning a classic timepeice that can be handed down to the next generation. If a watch survives all the trials and tribulations of life, it adds that much more value.

So, if you've given it thought (which you clearly have), don't let a few curmudgeons like us ruin your day. The advise on where to get a new and used watch that's been listed here is sound. Good luck and happy gift giving!

Firstly, I'm not sure I'd buy a $2000 watch for a 13 year old, but that is your own choice, if it were me, I'd probably put that money in a college fund where it would serve him a lot better in the long run.

Also, giving a mechanical watch is a bit like giving a pet. Be sure that the recipient is aware of the care and maintenance that comes with it. Can he afford a $500 service when he's 18?

That aside, you can get some nice pre-owned Breitlings in the 2k range. Check out the forsale section on here or timezone.com.

TRUEST WORDS EVER SPOKEN!
 Dhalem!

You know why most of us here just so COMPLETELY LOVE our FIRST Breitling?
Because we earned it...
A Breitling is not just another watch, it has a lot to do with the saving one had to do to set up a watch fund and sacrifices one had to make (these are not cheap), the memories/ achievements associated with it. Of course, that's just my Opinion. Wish I had an uncle like you when I was 13!! :D
Good luck with your hunt!

I am getting married in two weeks and the DateJust that my grandfather wore over the years of my childhood, will be given to me. For me, it's not about the watch itself, but that it represents the years of his life that has passed through and that he wants me to continue onward with it.

There is something special about a timepiece as a sentimental gift

I decided to do this. Thank you all for your input. There was one thing I'm very glad was posted and made me think. I will be sure to let him know that he shouldn't wear this watch to school or without his parents until they feel he is old enough to do so. He is a great kid he is going to get a great watch. Only draw back is I have to wait a little longer for my next watch  . I'm not 100% certain on what I want next anyway. I am leaning towards a black dial, black band watch. I have a lot of stainless steel watches so I am leaning towards a leather or crock band. I'm also torn if I want something with a diamond bezel, they are beautiful but they can also be obnoxious and there seems to be a fine line between the two.

Congratulations on your wedding. If you think the Rolex is heavy it is nothing compared to the ball and chain you are about to get lol. Just kidding I hope you have a long and happy marriage.
