The shortest answer is the quartz is not Chronometer certified and the SQ is

A quartz watch makes use of a quartz crystal vibrating at 32,768 Hz. The speed of vibration however is affected by temperature - the warmer the temperature the faster the vibration. Superquartz is Breitling's name for thermo compensated quartz technology that uses temperature sensors and look up tables to compensate for the temperature variations that a watch experiences and improve the accuracy over a standard quartz movement.

I dont think that is correct Sonnyman.....the Quartz can be Chronometer certified...see the B1 refs 68062 and 68362. Is it not the case that the two movements are different - Breitling 68 for Quartz and Breitling 78 for SQ ?

The SQ keeps far better time though i believe.....+- 15 seconds / year if i am not mistaken.

The Superquartz is thermocompensated which makes it more accurate.

Quartz = +/- 15 seconds/month

Superquartz = +/- 15 seconds/year

Steve is right that the non SQ can be COSC rated. My B-1 is.

All Breitling caliber 6X "Quartz II" movements have been COSC certified since 2000. In fact, the earlier caliber 5X "Quartz" movements have all been COSC certified since 2000 as well. Look at the quartz caliber numbers in 2000 and later Chronologs and you'll find 5X, 6X and (after 2002) 7X SQ calibers listed, all having been COSC certified. COSC standards for a quartz movement are +/- .07 sec/day (+/- 25.5 sec/year) and these pre-SQ movements easily qualify. Breitling touts +/- 15 sec/year for their thermocompensated caliber 7X SQ movements which in real world conditions are closer to +/- 5 sec/year in my experience. Hope this helps...
