Has anybody had any experience with these small square pads. Do they do more harm than good? If the wrong pad is used, will the shine come off? Can it be re-buffed after that?
thnx,

Two completely different things .
The Cape cods are for polishing and very fine scratch removal. They work well, require a lot of patience, but are for polished surfaces only. They will convert a brushed service to polished, either by intention or accident.

The other item - the pad, is just the opposite. It is not for polished surfaces but for brushed surfaces only. You rub it on the surface in the direction of the grain but have to be very careful with it and only go in the direction of the grain.

Hypothetically speaking (a-hemm), if one was to use the second item on a polished surface of a watch (quit looking at me), would the first item correct the problem caused by the second item?

Yes, but it might take a while depending on how damaged it is.

I was doing the dishes yesterday and remembered reading on here somewhere about using a type of scouring pad to get marks out of a brushed finish. I gave it a little go (being very careful to follow the grain of the brushed finish) with the dark green side and it worked really well.

The old Herc is looking much better for it :)

Thankfully you didn't buy one of those rip off abrasive pads. They are just piece of a much larger Scotch Brite pad which can be bought very cheaply.

I reckon he must get about 12 of those small pads out of one full size one.

You can also try one of those foam blocks that your wife uses for her finger nails to touch up a brushed finish. I found they are easier to get consistant straight lines than the scotch brite pads and they usually have coarse and fine sides to allow you to match the factory grain.

EDIT- One word of wisdom, if you do decide to try one of these, buy your own, don't steal your wife's.........

Can you use one of those scotch-brite pads on a polished surface or only a satin finish?

If you use it on a polished surface then it will give it a brushed finish, but much harder to get a good look as you have to do much more work and need to keep the marks all going in the same direction.
