As Roff says, if putting your watch next to your cell phone at night is not good, then I'm thinking working next to one of these all day can't be good either :D

Just kidding, that's why I wear my $80 quartz fossil when I work in the field.

That is a 45MW hydro-electric generator, installed in about 1945, I am currently at site finishing an upgrade to it, kind of like sending your watch off to BUSA for an overhaul (but with a few more zeros in the invoice). To your watch it would be one huge electro-magnet spinning at 100rpm.

When I first started this job I would forget to take my wallet out of my pocket and kept having to get new bank and credit cards, and hotel room key cards, etc, etc.

Whats next, a couple cells can make popcorn pops?

Fake.

Cells won't do anything to your watch. If they did, it would be all over the news, and health issues would be raised.

Cells are 100% safe, cept for your wallet when you call international for 20 mins

Hmm, r u sure Shadow? Just a few years back when I still use one of those Motorolla w pull out antenna, I use to love touching the antenna to a paper clip to see the sparks...

But come to think of it, that must have been 15 years ago or so... Maybe modern cellphones are a lot more "insulated"?

Nah, it's the paper clips they've improved. :)

The cell signal, which are short pulses of low intensity microwaves, certainly won't have an effect on magnetism. I think the main concern with placing your wacth near electronic devices is that you are placing them near the magnets used in the speakers.

Really?

Do magnets know when they have been installed in cell phones then? Or do the magnets in cell phones know that they aren't allowed to affect the hairsprings in watches?

Relating back to the original topic......

BoneDoc did an experiment a year or so back with the MRI machine in the hospital he works at - can't remember how fast the watch rand, but pretty darn fast!

I had a similar experience, but it wasn't an "experiment". I've ruined a watch by wearing it inside the "red zone" of an NMR. An NMR works on the same principle as an MRI. There's a very intense magnetic field that completely hosed the timing. Ran fast fast fast. I just tossed the watch because it wasn't in particularly good shape to begin with.

I wasn't talking about my cell phone affecting my credit cards, I was referring to the generator affecting credit cards. :D

Yes really.

You are comparing a MRI vs a cell now.
