Post subject:  Fake swap scam...what's your experience dealing with it?

I'm going to stay somewhat vague with my details as this is an on-going issue for me. Essentially, I sold a Breitling Navi World and did the transaction through Paypal. All was very smooth until apprx. 2 weeks after the transaction, the gentlemen files a dispute, or claim...whatever it's called, claiming "watch received not as described". etc. during the resolution dialogue, there was even a claim of it not being "original" (which is not possible) There was no other communication, email / phone. I agreed to a refund as long as the watch had not been damaged/tampered with...btw, Paypal had already put a hold on the funds in my account. The buyer finally ships the watch which I guess gives Paypal the trigger to refund him the money. Almost a month after the initial transaction, the watch gets delivered back to me except it's not the watch I sent. It's a fake...I didn't even notice it at first, left the watch sitting on my desk, but after a closer look, my Navi World was gone...I'm taking this up with Paypal but the initial dialogue was somewhat depressing...

Have you guys & gals dealt with this before? Would love to hear what recourse you had? Things you did to protect yourself, prove your claim, etc.
Many Thanks!

I sold a Navi World to a guy who filed a claim with Paypal about 2 months after the sale saying the transaction was fraudulent and Paypal took the money out of my account. Since the whole transaction was verified by Paypal and I was given the OK to ship the watch, Paypal let me keep the money and said it was up to the buyer's credit card company to try to recover the funds. It was a very stressful 2 weeks but I was glad to see it was resolved in my favor. Since this happened, I can't complain about the 3% Paypal takes from every transaction.

when paypal put a hold on your funds , did you clear that hold with your creditcard ? or did you transfer from your bank account to resolve the 'hold' ?

I am asking because you still can ask / tell your creditcard company to dispute the payment and get the money back from paypal , even if paypal does not want to cooperate you can get your CC company to get your money back

obviously this will not work if you resolved the 'hold' with a direct deposit from a bank account, banks do not support this (why not ?)

That's a good question...the hold funding was done automatically. I would assume it was from by bank account but I'll double check.
