This may be the wrong place to post this as I know the watch is genuine.

The seller listed this as a chronomat but I don't think it is. My assumption is a chronomat is short for chronomatic which is an automatic chronograph and a chronograph is a watch with "stop watch" function - I would be grateful if someone could confirm this.

You're correct in thinking this is not a Chronomat. The seller is wrong.

Hopefully, this will explain the terms.

Chronomat (like Antares) is a model name used by Breitling. It has been used for lots of different watches since the 1940s which were originally all manual wind.

Chrono-matic is also a Breitling model name for a different watch to the Chronomat. The name was first used in 1969 for the first automatic Chronomat.

Chronograph is a generic term for a watch with a stopwatch function. They can be manual, automatic or quartz.

And for completeness, chronometer is a generic term for a watch which has been tested to specific accuracy. All Breitling watches since around 2000 are tested by COSC - Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute. Again, they can be manual, automatic or quartz.

The chrono-matic was actually named that way because it was an automatic chronograph, not chronomat. They were actually automatic Navitimers.

Thanks for the correction. I'd always assumed Chrono-matic derived from Chronomat since it just adds "ic" to the name.
