I just purchased this watch on Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/BREITLING-S-S-NAVIT ... 3cae9801e9

for an excellent price from what appears to be a reputable source. The problem I have is that in looking on the Breitling Source Forum under Caliber 38. The dial of the watch I purchased appears not to match the dial shown - it has arabic numerals and the dial of the watch shown on the forum has no numerials. From reading the information on the forum for spotting fakes the case appears to be OK.

All comments would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like a genuine 1461/52 Navitimer. 1996/7 Chronolog shows this model with numerals at a price of £4,525 so it looks like a bargain. Steve

Thanks very much for the reply. It makes me feel better. I have been searching for a Breitling 1461 with numerals for a few months. Even though this was a 10 day listing on Ebay, I did not find it in my search until there was only about 20 minutes left and I had to make a quick decision (it did not come up using Breitling 1461 to search and I found it in a search of Breitlings listings ending soon). I was the only bidder and got it for the starting price.

You are right - if it is real it is a bargain since it is over $1,000 dollars cheaper than any other 1461 that I have been able to find. In addition, I much prefer the 52 week dial over the moon face (I am not a big fan of moon faces).

Thanks again

I would like to thank all of you who responded. You have been very helpful. Although this is my first Breitling, I am a watch collector. A few weeks ago, I backed out of a deal for another watch because it was a fake (or replica if you prefer). It was a very good fake - a Maurice Lacroix with "papers". The only way I was able to tell it was a fake was that the information on the rotor in the display back was for a different movement than the one specified for the watch. This experience, as well as horror stories of watches bought on the internet, made me think more than twice about buying the watch. The only reason I pulled the trigger was that the seller had a good reputation on Ebay, and offered a money back guarantee.

I am very happy to have gotten the Breitling I was looking for at a bargain price. I will keep you posted after the watch arrives.

Thanks again to all of you.

I wasn't aware they make fakes of Maurice Lacroix watches :wowzers

One other thing to consider regarding purchasing on eBay is that with their new Buyer Protection Program, you are covered no matter what. So even if it had ended up being counterfeit, you would have been safe and received your money back. Buying on eBay is a no brainer now, although you still want to go with reputable sellers and deals that make sense, as you'd much rather get what you want in the first place rather than have to file a claim. I don't think the program is available worldwide yet, but it is for anyone purchasing on eBay.com.

This was the first "fake" of a Maurice Lacroix that I had seen. However, it was clearly a fake. The movement should have had 49 jewels. The rotor said 47 jewels. In addition it was a fake of one of Maurice Lacroix's flyback annual chronographs which should do the 30 & 31 day months correclty. The brief check I made gave me an April with 31 days.

This was in Singapore which much better than most places in Asia, but still has a lot of fakes.

To VMMVMMM

The Ebay buyer protection program was another reason I bought the watch despite my uncertainty. However, I have had to use that program twice before for items which was bought but not delivered. Ebay was very helpful, but it still took me a couple months to get my money back in both cases.

I've seen replicas of the Pontos (with the standard Asian 7750) and the Masterpiece (with a "Lemania" manual wind movement).
