I need some help with a recommendation. I have never owned a Rolex and prefer larger watches but am considering buying a Rolex DeepSea Sea Dweller. Does anybody out there own one and if so would you recommend it?
Is anyone able to get the discounts talked about on this forum for Rolex & if so can someone give me an AD in the US that offers a good price?

you should concider posting this in the appropriate forum catagory, as this one is "Breitling Discussion"

that aside, its a nice watch and I would concider one except for the bracelet seem out of proportion to the head (to me) and like most Rolex's, its over priced. If they would have made the bracelet at least 22mm all the way around I would definitely be thinking harder about getting one. Maybe because Breitling makes such a nicer bracelet and I am spoiled. To me Rolex almost got it right... almost.

Great watch, I love it. Dont pay over 8.5K USD for it.

The only issue I have with it, is that you are paying more for the instrument than you are for a watch. It is a bit expensive, and only justifies it with its technical achievment. It also has the world's best clasp ever conceived.

A bit of info; no equipment was ever created that could test its water resistance, so they had to comission COMEX to create specialized equipment that could verify the water resistancy, they even had to distribute new tools to their service centers that could adequately seal the case :shock:

I think Rolex spent allot here to retain the Dive watch throne, but they did an excellent job.

I bought a DEEPSEA last weekend and haven't taken it off since. It's true that the bracelet seems to taper too much, but it is very comfortable and doesn't look out of place at all. The case itself is also a bit thick, but again, remember that this beast is rated for 3900m! Yes, it is expensive, but the cost is relative to what you are getting. If you have the means and want a good looking "tool" watch then the DSSD is certainly one to consider. Good luck with the decision!

I think its a cool watch, but a bit expensive for me too... that said if it were a tad larger I would be in trouble ;)

I seem to have a different feeling here about this one, I was at an AD yesterday and they had both old and new, the new just looked cheap to me, I really dislike the writing on the dial, the stuff around the circumference, to me it reminds me of what cheaper watch companies do to make their watch special by touting its features. The old one I would have in a hearbeat, understated and classy and to me much more a pro tool! The new one looks like a wanna be even though it is technically greater, sorry but that is what it looked like to me. A lot of the rolexes of late seem to have a thing about over branding. I think it cheapens the watch!
For me I would go with the old one, really classy, I predict once the fad for the new one has gone the old ones prices will exceede the new ones on the used market!

Quite possibly one of Rolexs' worst...an aberation!

The bracelet is out of proportion to the head - it's too small. What's with all this "Rolex, Rolex, Rolex" on the rehaut? I know that if I owned it, I'd know it's a Rolex! The dial is like a story book, do you really need all that superfluous information?

The only saving grace is the bracelet adjustment which is rather neat, otherwise it's a grotesque watch and very much overpriced.
I was filled with something approaching excitement when I read of the Deepsea's iminent launch in the UK; nothing quite like a phone call from your Rolex AD telling you the watch has arrived, trot off down there and then handle the ugly thing to put you off. Even the AD agreed it was a less than perfect execution from Rolex.

All IMO of course! :wink:

I've got a question...

Who will ever go scuba diving to 12800ft? Then why did Rolex make a watch that could withstand the pressure of being 12800ft below water?

Its just a technological achievement. My Steelfish are rated at 6600ft, but at about 200ft I am likely not going to care about the rest of the way down.

Well after trying on the Deep Sea at my local AD (who offered me 20% off!) I decided to pass on the watch. :cry:
Thanks for everyones input. I really liked the new adjustment piece on the buckle but I agree with some other comments that the width of the bracelet was too small for the size of the actual watch. The weight of the watch was also nice but it seemed like a Rolex Sub on steriods & nothing more.

Before you go off the deep end, consider the other Rolex diver. The new reference 14060M COSC. This is a non-date Sub with the latest movement and COSC thrown in. You can go down to 1000 feet/300 meters. I bought it instantly as it is the reincarnation (with improvements ) of the 60's 70's reference 5512, non date COSC Sub. Consider your needs. Mine is keeping excellent time; +1 per 24 hours. It is not shown on the Rolex official site and someone remarked some place it was not shown at Basil. So who knows what Rolex intends.

Strange there are so many DSSD haters on here. I've had one for about a month and a half now and it's been getting the lions share of the wrist time. I find it to be very comfortable on the wrist and...just cool to look at.

After seeing the same sized Rolex sport models your mind kind of gets used to seeing the 40mm case, I don't know if I'm explaining this right but everytime I look down at my wrist it's like I'm looking at an optical illusion or my eyes are playing tricks on me, a Rolex dive watch shouldn't be that big!

Blah, blah, cliff notes - it's an awesome watch!
