This seems like it should go in off topic discussions but since it is watch related I posted it here. Mods please move it if needed. Ok guys, I am going to throw this out there and see if anyone responds. Something like this topic may have been proposed in the past and if you have already done it then please just kill me, but I thought it would be fun and perhaps a bit thought provoking. Breitlings are known for their ruggedness and durability. “Instruments for professionals” is their slogan. Indeed, Breitling watches have many features on their models that are attractive to both professionals and to lay people as well. But there are also other watch manufacturers that have incorporated certain features that many on this forum find attractive and beneficial. For instance, I was noticing Altairs new IWC Big Ingenieur with the seven day power reserve. That in my opinion is a really nice feature. Would come in handy when you really tie one on and pass out for a week! At least when you finally come around you would know what day it was. But seriously, that is really nice. It started me thinking about watch features and so I came up with the following question. Of course, you are marooned on a deserted island. Foods, water, shelter no problem. Aside from the basic watch feature, that is an hour and a minute hand, what is the one thing, feature, construction design, complication, whatever, on a watch that you would also want. And no you can not have a Breitling Emergency! At least if you do, pretend the emergency locator is broken. I mean would you care about a calendar function? Would you prefer waterproof over automatic winding? Would you care about automatic winding? Heck, winding your watch might be your one looked forward to activity of the day! Would you even care what time it is in the first place. The more I think about this the harder it becomes to pick just a single feature that I would choose. This is not limited to Breitling, all watches included. Myself, I am still sitting here on a Sunday morning contemplating this. Hmmm. lets see…deserted island…warm tropical nights…..Rum…Rum…Rum….too much rum…….ZZZZZZZZZZ. Have a wonderful Sunday guys! Elwyn |

I know it sounds weird but I'd take MarkVI Comp. 29. It has perpetual calendar and 100m WR. |

I would definitely want to a have a working watch to perhaps help keep track of tides for when I make my escape from the island on my makeshift raft. So, most important to me would be durability, and it would have to be waterproof. A perpetual calendar doesn't seem like it would be necessary - I could just keep track of the days by carving lines into a palm tree or on a rock wall. So, unless anyone can recommend a durable, waterproof watch that has a built in lighter, I'll just go with my Colt. |

On a deserted island I would have to take something quartz, and with lots of water resistance. If I was on a deserted island, and my mechanical stopped for whatever reason, I would never be able to set it again because I wouldn't have anything to check it against.. |

I would feel like I had a limited time to get off the island although the precision of quartz over time would be of benefit as well. Definately waterproof. |

I would the biggest possible watch (48mm or above) polished SS with a mirror face. That way I could signal for help by reflecting the suns rays. I might be able to start fires as well ala Lord of the Flies. |

I think I would go mechanical as well, probably auto in case I forgot to wind it. WR would be a key thing - not just for obvious reasons, but generally means that it is less likely to get dirt, sand, etc into it. I would want to track days, but don't really need a calendar function for that - I've found daylight to be a fairly reliable measure  All analogue watches can act as a compass, so no need for anything special there. Beyond that, I'm just not sure. |

Panerai 270. 10 Day automatic movement, so there's next to no chance of it stopping. It's also 100m water resistant and pretty rugged. And it has a calendar just in case you managed to make some coconut rum on this desert island and lose a day due to being totally wasted!

As that's highly unlikely water resistance and automatic would be my two features
