I have been looking at getting a beater quartz for many reasons. I need something to set my mechanicals to and I was recentely thinking about the 43MM size the new LE Navitimer, so I am looking at getting one at 43MM and testing the waters and see if the size works for me.

This seems to fit the bill:

Any others under 300 I should be aware of?

I can't comment on the type of Eco Drive you choose but I can definitely say that they are a quality watch. I've had a couple over the past 10 years or so that are light powered and to date haven't required a battery change...plus the perpetual calendar is another strong feature of the watch.

Whichever way you go they are a good investment in my books. Good luck!

I have a Citizen Eco Drive that I bought as a "get me by" until I had saved up enough for my first real watch. I really liked it at the time, but ever since my collection started, I havent worn it at all

For a really cheap, but automatic, I would look at a Monster Seiko. Not as comlicated, but it is an auto.

$175 on amazon

ps, I thought you had a Steelfish as your "knockaround"

Thansk for the suggestions guys.

My Steelfish is definately not a knockaround, its too nice  My Oris Diver is my current diving and beach watch, while my Seiko diver has been my knockaround for ages for camping, working in the garage/lawn, any type of activity that might damage my nicer watches.

As stated above I was looking for something Quartz and ultra reliable. I dont want to pay too much so Swiss Quartz is out. And that Citizen seems like it can take a beating and then some.

Just check out the proportions- 55mm diameter and 19mm thickness. Mighty expensive though.

I still have others but too embarrassed to show due to photo quality.
Once I get the light kit hold on to your hats.
I'm still not showing my Patek Calatrava, Tag Monaco, Vintage Omega, etc.

Not bad, something about the bezel isn't quite doing it for me, but overall I like it.

Buying new beaters is fun, you don't have to think about it as much and can be a bit more experimental than with more expensive pieces :) . My Orange Monster has been a faithful beater for a while now, but I could help myself buying a Luminox recently. Have you considered a Luminox? Mine's about 43mm and came in under USD300. It's plasticky but it looks good (different kind of look though) and the lume is seriously cool.
