This is probably way too specialised for most of you, but it's just too cool not to post. I am seriously considering purchasing this, the only thing putting me off is that I don't know anyone who would be prepared to work on it - http://www.chrono24.com/en/search/pocke ... mresults=1 I suspect most of you will think I've lost my mind! |

That is a nice piece. Can you imagine what it looked like when it was brand new? Kinda strange how thick it is, but I would suspect that its size was "state of the art" for the manufacture date. If you do buy this are you going to have it restored to its original finish? |

That's always the challenge. I would certainly have the movement returned to working condition, although accuracy with a piece like this is a relative term. In terms of finish, I would probably only have it cleaned - the patina adds character to it and if you have it returned to 'like new' you lose 400 years of history. In my limited experience though it's a challenge finding someone who is prepared to work on these - even though the movements are simpler and sturdier, the age alone puts people off. In this condition you obviously want to avoid replacement parts, anything that did need replacing would have to be fabricated. I'll likely not buy it unless I already have someone lined up who will work on it. |

I thought you posted on a guy who would work on any vintage piece. Or was that only Breitlings. For what you spend on watches, this one is a steal from a vintage perspective! Even if you do not have someone lined up, given a little time YOU of all people will certainly find one. Really fascinating piece Roff. ![]() |

My father went to Nogales, the AZ side of border, to train repairing pocket watches with a master watch maker there. Only a few years ago,10 or so? He makes most of his own parts. If the old guy is still around he would be a canidate to work on it. I can see if he is still working on watches and put you in touch with him. It looks like it had a cover over the dial. Is there a hynge there? I think it is a prize. I spent that much on current models and they do not have the history that that one has. |

I'm not denying that your knowledge of watch history would be higher... a year ago I hadn't ever heard of Breitling ![]() My daddy can beat up your daddy! ![]() |

Very nice looking, though impractical I can see the lure. If that one does not pan out take a look at JLC's website and check out their pocket watch. Gorgeous! Best of luck Roff, a pocket watch of that caliber could become an instant heirloom. |
