So after deciding against the Freak X, I started looking at Pilot watches again. As part of my consolidation efforts, I have four watches on sale at a local store, and started thinking of what to use that watch money for. I currently only have the LE Steinhart in the pilot category. And have been considering getting a high end piece to round out the collection.

I took another look at the Patek Travel Pilot. Impeccable finishing, good looks, use full function.... but it felt more like a dress watch than a true Pilot watch inspired by military history, it’s even in white gold!

I do like it, but not sure it’s worth the investment at 41k usd. And it’s only 42mm, which I think speaks to the non military feel they are going for.

I then stoped by IWC to see what’s what. The bronze is cool, but tiny at 41, the Standard 7 days is been there done that. Then I saw this:

Very cool! 48 mm beast of a homage! Bead blasted titanium, vintage inspired in house movement, limited edition, same price as a BP at 11 k usd. I was surprised to not find any buzz on the net about it?

What’s the group thoughts on that watch? I am seriously considering it!

While the Heritage BP is nice, I prefer the blue dials of the LPP Big Pilots.

You see, I think the Patek Travel Pilot has a classic pilot's look: I think it just needs more of a pilot strap.

An alternative that I absolutely love (although not a completely classic pilots watch) would be the "Zenith Pilot Montre d’Aeronef Type 20 Annual Calendar". It's big, but an absolute belter and powered by a very cool version of the El Primero.

Interesting thoughts. The LPP blue is nice but personally I have too many blue dials. And I think of the BP as a military watch, and was looking for something that was as devoted to the original as the PAM 127.

Interesting Zenith too, looks like it was patched up :/

That said great price for the features!
