Well, spurred on by my trying on of a Big Pilot the other week and now picking up the IWC catalog, I'm now pretty sure I NEED a ceramic IWC Top Gun Doppelchronograph.

Here's a link to one if you're not familiar with it -

http://www.chrono24.com/en/iwc/1335302.htm?SETLANG=ENGB

I've always had an interest in materials techonology since my physics days and reading up on the net about the ceramic material IWC uses really makes me want one.

The material the ceramic is made from is Zirconium Oxide, which has a hardness rating of 8.2mohs. Bearing in mind that a stainless steel knife blade is around 5.5mohs and a hardened steel file is 6.5, that's pretty hard! It's also only just below the corundum used in sapphire crystal (9mohs). It's super wear resistant both mechanically and chemically, highly impact resistant, almost impossible to break (apparently one manufacturer gives a demo using a Zirconium Oxide hammer! ), and can even withstand temperature changes (thermal shock) as rapid as room temperature to 1540°C in 30 seconds. Not quite sure what use that'll be in a watch  , but you get the idea - it's damn tough stuff!!!!

Plus the fact that the Top Gun Doppelchronograph is a great looking piece, and it all adds up to yet another watch that I NEED!! :D

I can see the appeal in that one, very nice indeed, I'm beginning to warm to certain IWC models.

But then you'll need to change you name from Driver to Maverick

Not bad......

But this continuous belief that members should be buying non Portuguese IWCs is really starting to concern me.

Tried one on yet, Driver? I did, and was hooked. I will have it, one day.

I even like the strap, which a lot of people don't seem to like.

No I've not tried one on yet Otto - the AD where I tried the Big Pilot didn't have one in. :( But the size is basically the same as the BP (give or take 0.2mm!) so I just KNOW it'll look The Business!

I hear it's quite light, although the soft iron inner-case adds a bit of weight. I'm undecided about the strap at the moment as I've only seen pictures, and I do think it'd look great on black leather....... but I'm sure I'll be persuaded by the nylon in person!

To my mind it doesn't wear as chunky as the BP, despite the dimensions being similar. It seemed a lot flatter, if that makes sense. Not in a bad way though.

Just get 'em both... (I know, if only it were that simple).

Does it really? That's interesting because according to the IWC catalogue while it's onlt 0.2mm less in diameter, it's actually 2mm thicker. I think I definitely need to get this baby on!

If only......
