I admire U-Boat - to be able to get the prices that they do for pieces with such low build quality is truly remarkable (even allowing for the considerable discount from list that they sell for)!

For me, there are a lot better watches for the money.

There is a bronze edition, I would love to see that one.

So their quality is low? That sucks, I really like the look of this watch but not if the quality isn't at least as good as Breitling.

Lol! Roger that. For that much I could probably pick up a new SO and maybe a gently used Chronomat... Yeah I like that idea better!

Hi Roff, would you mind to explain the quality differences?

Most watches are produced using automated manufacturing techniques, but different brands will apply different levels of tolerance to the output of those automated processes - i.e. how much can a particular part vary from the norm to be considered acceptable. While I have no empirical evidence it is clear from the products in the market place that U-Boat accept much more variation than some other brands which results in uneven case finishing, imperfect dials, etc. The movements are generic and are not finely regulated before being cased up which can lead to huge variance of rate - both from watch to watch and within the same watch in different positions and different power reserves. Additionally, the watches seem to have more mechanical issues than average suggesting issues in the way that the watches are cased up - handling of the movement, conditions when they are cased up, etc.

Thanks a lot for the heads up! Now I'm one step closer to WISdom. :D

I can take them or leave them. Nothing really grabs me, but I do like some of there detailing. The enormous crowns are a giggle but the pushers are interesting. Each to their own and if you buy, then enjoy.

There are a lot of negative things said about U-Boat on the watch forums. From what I can gather, most of it is written by people who have never owned or even handled a U-Boat. They seem to read second hand info and pass it on and on and on - third, forth, fifth hand negative information.

I own a U-Boat U-42 47mm and love it. It's one of my favorite watches. I have had no problems with quality control. I can't say the same for a number of Breitlings I've owned (including my latest acquisition, a Bentley Supersports Light Body which retails for over $10K and has a problem with its bezel).

My U-Boat is not of the same finish or movement quality as my Breitlings, but that is a very high standard. In fact no other brand I've owned comes close to Breitling's finishing.

U-Boat's designs are very bold and their pricing is high. For those reasons U-Boat is a very polarizing brand. But there is a reason U-Boat can pull those prices - their designs are awesome. If you like that watch and don't mind straying from the herd, I say go for it.

I wouldn't recommend paying more than 50% of retail for a U-Boat. Nor would I recommend paying more than 50% for a Breitling.

Here's mine U-42:

Wow that looks badass! Made of titanium and brass IP black coated, ceramic bezel? That's really a sick piece.
