Post subject:  Second Time Around: Rolex Air-King

Four years ago, I purchased this beautiful Air-King. Not getting wrist time, I traded it with a friend. Yesterday, we traded again and I got it back. My first Rolex in over 3 years.

The Air-King feels like it has been on my wrist forever, a classic, and so appropriate for any place at any time. It has a sense of occasion that has not been present in any other watch I have owned. Regardless of what anyone says, there is something special about the grade of steel Rolex uses, apart from it's resistance to corrosion. It has a sparkle that no other watch manufacturer is able to emulate. And that comes from the steel itself. I have always felt that is so, and once again it has proven itself to me.

I admit a diehard fan I am of Omega watches. Regardless of what comes along in the Omega lineup, I don't know how I will ever be able to part with this Air-King once again. It has a uniqueness that is not present in any other watch, and indeed even in any other Rolex. It exudes class more than any watch I have owned.

Recently, I acquired a watch that is to be my special 65th birthday present to myself. Although it ended up not being a Rolex, I had given myself a fairly generous budget, and tried on just about every model up to, and including, the Yacht-Master 116622. Nothing that I tried, I felt, could compare to the Air-King, but I did not want to buy the same watch again. So I ended up with another brand, and one that I am most happy with. Now that I have the Air-King back again, I am double happy!

Sorry to ramble on a bit. Here are some photos I took yesterday. My friend took wonderful care of this lovely watch for the past 3 years, and it still looks new:

More than happy to have a Rolex again! Thanks for looking at my thread.

An often-forgotten and overlooked piece, along with the Explorer I. Size of the pieces has something to do with that I'm sure, though the EXP I is up to 39mm. I suspect with size trends going down a little and the escalating price of the Sub and more well-known Rolexes, these may garner more interest. As it is , a beautiful example. While we are all clamoring at once for new materials and technology, simplicity, done right, is just as appealing. Congratulations Carl.
