Post subject: | 2013/14 General Watch Competition - complete |
OK, so finally getting this rolling. We have already done brand specific competitions for Omega, Panerai, Rolex, JLC and Zenith to get down to the top four for those brands. I have also added in the top 4 from the 2013 Breitling competition for a total of 79 watches. We need to get down to 64 for the knockout portion of the competition so there are 15 'play in' match ups to get to that number. I threw the list of 79 watches at the list randomiser at random.org and the top 49 from that randomisation are already in the final 64. Those are (in the order that random.org threw out): RGM Pennsylvania 801E Rolex Submariner Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Chrono Seiko Grand Seiko Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpa XL Omega PloProf 1200m Louis Moinet Twintech Glashutte Original Senator Regulator Chronometer Omega Speedmaster 9300 Sinn 756 Diapal Girard-Perregaux World Timer Financial Chronograph Panerai 372 Glashutte Original Panorama Date Moon Phase Tudor Heritage Black Bay IWC Big Pilot A Lange & Sohne 1815 Breitling Cosmonaute Lemania SE Omega Planet Ocean Rolex Daytona Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph Parmigiani Fleurier Pershing 005 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Automatic Breitling Navitimer 01 Concord C1 Seiko Grand Seiko Spring Drive Bvlgari Daniel Roth Petite Seconde Chronoswiss Grand Regulateur JLC Master Compressor Diving Automatic Navy Seals Rolex Datejust II F P Journe Chronometre Bleu Franc Vila FVa 15 Zenith Chronomaster Grande Date Panerai 312 Vulcain Cricket X-Treme Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Patek Philippe Calatrava 5119 Zenith Pilot Big Date IWC Portofino Hand Wound 8 Days Cvstos Challenge-R 50 Chronograph RGM Pennsylvania 801 ES Breitling Transocean Chronograph 1461 Rolex GMT Master Cartier Calibre de Cartier JLC Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic Panerai 441 Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.012 Carl F Bucherer Patravi Calendar Carl F Bucherer Patravi Traveltec GMT Arnold & Son World Timer Skeleton The other 30 watches are matched up in the play ins and those will be live in the Projects section - viewforum.php?f=25 within a few minutes. I randomly took numbers 50 to 79 from the random.org list and matched up 50 with 79, 51 with 78, etc. I would have adjusted to prevent two brands going head to head but that wasn't necessary. The 30 watches competing to make the final 64 are: Zenith El Primero Striking 10th Breitling Chronomat 769 JLC Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Aquadive Bathyscaphe 300 Glashutte Original PanoMaticLunar Lang & Heyne Friederich III Hublot Big Bang Aero Cartier Tank Louis Cartier Extra Large Breguet Marine Big Date Patek Philippe Aquanaut Cartier Tank MC IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Bell & Ross Vintage 126 Blackbird Roger Dubuis Easy Diver Tudor Heritage Chronograph Blue Doxa Sub 5000T IWC 7 Day Portuguese Armin Strom Blue Chip Skeleton Bremont Supermarine Glashutte Original Senator Perpetual Calendar Breguet Type XX Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bremont MB2 Panerai 233 Piaget Emperador Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Lune Retrograde Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph JLC Master Compressor Extreme W-Alarm Devon Works Tread 1 As for the Breitling competition votes will run for a week. Please note that some of the headings of the voting threads have rather abbreviated watch names because of the character limit on thread titles in the forum software but the posts and voting options have full names and the links provided by the nominator of that watch. Please take the time to vote, a lot of people have contributed to this so far and I would really like to see the community embrace this - we know that we aren't just Breitling fans, so let's make this a great event and end up with a worthy winner! 1st round proper is now set, the following 64 watches made it: A Lange & Sohne 1815 Armin Strom Blue Chip Skeleton Arnold & Son World Timer Skeleton Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Automatic Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Breguet Type XX Breitling Chronomat 769 Breitling Cosmonaute Lemania SE Breitling Navitimer 01 Breitling Transocean Chronograph 1461 Bvlgari Daniel Roth Petite Seconde Carl F Bucherer Patravi Calendar Carl F Bucherer Patravi Traveltec GMT Cartier Calibre de Cartier Cartier Tank Louis Cartier Extra Large Chronoswiss Grand Regulateur Concord C1 Cvstos Challenge-R 50 Chronograph F P Journe Chronometre Bleu Franc Vila FVa 15 Girard-Perregaux World Timer Financial Chronograph Glashutte Original PanoMaticLunar Glashutte Original Panorama Date Moon Phase Glashutte Original Senator Perpetual Calendar Glashutte Original Senator Regulator Chronometer IWC 7 Day Portuguese IWC Big Pilot IWC Portofino Hand Wound 8 Days IWC Portuguese Yacht Club JLC Master Compressor Diving Automatic Navy Seals JLC Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic JLC Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Lang & Heyne Friederich III Louis Moinet Twintech Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Lune Retrograde Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Omega Planet Ocean Omega PloProf 1200m Omega Speedmaster 9300 Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.012 Panerai 233 Panerai 312 Panerai 372 Panerai 441 Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpa XL Parmigiani Fleurier Pershing 005 Patek Philippe Calatrava 5119 RGM Pennsylvania 801 ES RGM Pennsylvania 801E Rolex Datejust II Rolex Daytona Rolex GMT Master Rolex Submariner Seiko Grand Seiko Seiko Grand Seiko Spring Drive Sinn 756 Diapal Tudor Heritage Black Bay Tudor Heritage Chronograph Blue Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Chrono Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph Vulcain Cricket X-Treme Zenith Chronomaster Grande Date Zenith El Primero Striking 10th Zenith Pilot Big Date The following were eliminated in the play in round: Aquadive Bathyscaphe 300 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph Bell & Ross Vintage 126 Blackbird Breguet Marine Big Date Bremont MB2 Bremont Supermarine Cartier Tank MC Devon Works Tread 1 Doxa Sub 5000T Hublot Big Bang Aero JLC Master Compressor Extreme W-Alarm Patek Philippe Aquanaut Piaget Emperador Roger Dubuis Easy Diver Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Round 1 losers: A Lange & Sohne 1815 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Automatic Breguet Type XX Bvlgari Daniel Roth Petite Seconde Carl F Bucherer Patravi Calendar Cartier Calibre de Cartier Cartier Tank Louis Cartier Extra Large Concord C1 Cvstos Challenge-R 50 Chronograph F P Journe Chronometre Bleu Franc Vila FVa 15 Girard-Perregaux World Timer Financial Chronograph JLC Master Compressor Diving Automatic Navy Seals JLC Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic Lang & Heyne Friederich III Omega Planet Ocean Omega PloProf 1200m Panerai 233 Panerai 312 Panerai 441 Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpa XL Parmigiani Fleurier Pershing 005 Patek Philippe Calatrava 5119 RGM Pennsylvania 801E Rolex GMT Master Seiko Grand Seiko Seiko Grand Seiko Spring Drive Sinn 756 Diapal Tudor Heritage Black Bay Tudor Heritage Chronograph Blue Vulcain Cricket X-Treme Zenith Chronomaster Grande Date Round 2 losers: Armin Strom Blue Chip Skeleton Arnold & Son World Timer Skeleton Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Breitling Chronomat 769 Breitling Transocean Chronograph 1461 Carl F Bucherer Patravi Traveltec GMT Chronoswiss Grand Regulateur Glashutte Original Panorama Date Moon Phase Glashutte Original Senator Regulator Chronometer Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Omega Speedmaster 9300 RGM Pennsylvania 801 ES Rolex Datejust II Rolex Daytona Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Chrono Zenith El Primero Striking 10th Round 3 losers: Panerai 372 IWC Portuguese Yacht Club IWC Big Pilot Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Lune Retrograde Glashutte Original PanoMaticLunar Breitling Cosmonaute Lemania SE Zenith Pilot Big Date Louis Moinet Twintech Quarter final losers: Breitling Navitimer 01 Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph Rolex Submariner IWC Portofino Hand Wound 8 Days Semi final losers: IWC 7 Day Portuguese Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.012 Winner - JLC Master Ultra Thin Perpetual 2nd place - Glashutte Original Senator Perpetual Calendar 3rd place - IWC 7 Day Portuguese 4th place - Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.012 |

Good work as usual on this Roff. No doubt very time-consuming to set up (as these things always are), so I echo your comments about members taking a few mins to get involved. A few tricky matchups in the play-ins - and I'm clearly out of kilter with the voting on so many of them! |

Thanks Roff as always for the tremendous amount of time you've dedicated to this project. Some very nice work indeed! Some nice match ups. I found I was in line with the majority of voters however way way off with a few, which isn't a bad thing - everyone should have a different opinion on watches. Some very close match ups too, which were very difficult to decide between. If anyone is willing to share, I'd be interested in people's approaches to the selections. What do people look for? For me it's wearability and looks in conjunction with knowledge of the movement and brand. I try not to be too penal on brands I don't particularly favor, rather select based on merit alone. I'm very curious as to the watches that will go far in the voting and do encourage as many people as possible to vote. |

Thanks for setting this up, and I'm sure it will be an interesting exercise. I have no doubt some of my tastes are strictly my own and I'm about to find out just how much so. I'm already distraught about having to vote between the Marine Big Date and the Fifty Fathoms in a play-in round---though it appears not many others have this problem. A couple of others are bugging me a lot, but we'll see how it all plays out. |

That was definitely a tough one for me also, although a few weeks ago I got to see and handle one of these two in the metal so I had to go with it (not saying which one at this time - don't want to influence the process - as if anyone would follow my tastes ![]() In response to Tim S, I typically voted on the basis of personal taste, wearability, and can I read the time ![]() Thanks for the time and effort Roff ![]() |

Great job Roff! My voting has been based purely on visual appeal. Which one do I prefer the look of, without much consideration to the brand, history, complications, etc... |

I have been voting by which one I would buy, also considering what complications and features I would rather have. Looks has a lot to do with it as well. It helps that 90% of the nominations I have seen before browsing the web and know a little bit about. It's been fun so far, thank you Roff! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My sincere thanks to you, Roff, for setting this up. I can only imagine how much time this takes you, but we all thoroughly enjoy the fun afterwards. |

Thanks Roff for setting this up again. Just put in my votes as well. A couple close ones as well, as well as some no-brainers IMO. But fun overall. Good to see some of my nominations doing well. Whoo hoo! |

I am in the distinct minority, but that's ok - the others have the right to be wrong. ![]() |

I'm about 95% going with what I think I would actually put on my wrist. I'm not nearly the WIS most of you are...love reading your posts about what/why makes something truly unique and while I can appreciate that I'm just not that well schooled in the finer points of watches. When I do happen to know there is some heritage or certain <Dr. Evil voice> I-don't-know-what</Dr. Evil voice> it helps sway my decision. But for the most part I'm looking at them and saying could I see myself putting that on and owning it, no matter the price, some just to do not sing to me. What has been great is seeing watches I did not even know existed. Take that Armin Strom Blue Chip Skeleton ![]() Thanks for all the effort/work! |
